Project Title

Voice Mail Service for Visually impaired

Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject Summary

In today’s world, digital communication is an integral part of everybody’s life. We use different communication platforms in our daily routines which provides an opportunity to get in touch with the world through emails, video conferencing, messaging and other communication modes. Email is one of the most widely used mode of communication both for personal and professional purposes. But unfortunately the visually impaired community is unable to use this facility efficiently. A very low percentage of this community has knowledge and resources for connecting with the world through email. They use different platforms to overcome this loss i.e Braille, JAWS etc, but these facilities are not enough to compete with the world. The other most common way that is used by most visually impaired persons is the use of third person for composing their email. But this does not provide the proper solution of their  problem because sometimes the content of the mail is personal or the third person is not available or helpful. Therefore, to overcome these issues we have come up  with an  idea that  helps the visually impaired people by providing them the facility to send  and receive emails using voice commands.

Project Objectives

This project proposes an Android app, specifically designed for people who are visually disable.

Our proposed system will help them effectively communicate via email without the assistance of anyone. The main objective of this idea is to provide help to visually impaired people to grow with world and understanding the technology. Application will understand user voice commands and with the help of the respondent voice commands user can interact easily and efficiently. The user needs to speak the pre-defined keywords for each action he or she must take. In this way it will become very easy way to access emails for those who cannot see. So the need to rely on other people for using mail will be reduced.

Project Implementation Method

Google Speech API

This API is used in this system for recognition of user’s voice in correct and understandable way.

Java Mail API

Services of Java Mail API is used for connecting the mail with given mailing address after composing.

Database (SQL)

To save the record of Mail addresses, register users and receiving mails. SQL is used for creating database.

Java

To implement the project we have chosen java language for its more interactive support.

Benefits of the Project

The Proposed system will make the email service accessible for visually impaired people. The main features we are trying to achieve in our proposed system are ease of use, accessibility and efficiency. The complete system is based on IVR- interactive voice response [1]. This system will help in overcoming some problems and issues that were earlier faced by the visually impaired people in accessing emails.

While using this system the app will be prompting and guiding the user to perform specific operations in order to successfully compose, send or receive email. Furthermore this project makes visually impaired people able to be part of a growing digital world by allowing them to communicate via the internet and making their life’s easier.

In coming future this system will provides the complete facility of sending, receiving, composing and drafting an email by user own efforts. By using this service users will easily receive the email from the receiver's side and will listen to the email by using the TTS command. This system will also reduce cognitive load taken by visually impaired people to remember and type characters using keyboard.
