Project Title

VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE WITH INVERTER ON HIGHWAYS FOR LOW LEVEL LIGHTING APPLICATION

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

The rapid growth of renewable energy generation is increasing to meet the electricity

demand. Solar and wind both are renewable energy sources. Solar energy available begins of

the day and the wind energy is maximum on the highway due to the speed of the vehicle. The

motivation of this project contributes to the global trend toward clean energy. This project

focuses on the use of wind caused by high-speed vehicles on highway sideway paths through

the help of vertical axis wind turbines. When the vehicle passes on the highway it produces a

considerable amount of air due to its speed. This air tangentially strikes on the blade of the

vertical axis wind turbine and it causes rotation of the turbine in only one direction. Presently

world in general and Pakistan, in particular, is facing an energy crisis even though Pakistan is

blessed with abundant natural resources required for its generation. There is a need to resolve

the crises as they are directly affecting all spheres of life. The government is trying to explore

economical renewable energy resources. Solar panels are been used for the street and pole

lighting but the comparison with the VAWT shows the areas where the VAWT has much

superiority over the PV panel as every single panel works for one light, but a VAWT can be

used for multiple lights. The renewable energy resource available in abundance is wind and

the aim is to use this artificially produced wind for electric power generation for street

lighting. Calculations were made for better understandings of the VAWT along the highways.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to utilize the maximum amount of wind energy
from the automobiles running on the highways. The unused and considerable amount
of wind is used to drive the vertical axis wind turbine, which will use the kinetic
energy of the wind to produce electrical energy. The generated energy by VAWT and
the solar system is stored in a battery and this stored energy that can be used street
lighting, toll gates, or in the future to provide the charging node to the electrical
vehicle.
The main goal is to utilize all this energy which is been wasted on the motorway and
many other highways and produced electric energy using this wind force by cars.

Project Implementation Method

? We aim to utilize the artificial wind produced due to vehicles on highways
through VAWT for creating energy, for the inverter. A VAWT is a type of
wind turbine where the principle rotor shaft is set transverse to the wind
direction while the fundamental parts are situated at the base of the turbine.
? This framework is controlled by ATmega 328 microcontroller, it will
comprise a vertical axis windmill, DC motor, 12V battery, DC inverter,
MOSFET switch, LCD, and transformer.
? The windmill produces mechanical energy when wind courses through the
turbine. This mechanical energy is changed over into electrical energy by
dynamo, the power esteems are shown on LCD. The Vertical Axis Windmill
converts the energy of wind into kinetic energy through blades and charges the
12V battery. As the battery is switched on, the inverter changes over DC into
AC, and the step-up transformer expands the voltage, required to run the
device. MOSFET is a transistor that manages the voltage and after that, the
load is powered

Benefits of the Project

Renewable energy is the most important topic in the world at present. It was identified
that the fossil fuel reserves in the world are diminishing rapidly and no reserves were
identified. In addition to that, energy generation from fossil fuel causes so many
environmental problems like emission of greenhouse gasses, global warming, and
acid rains. Renewable energy sources play a major role in these types of situations.
Renewable energy is the energy that extracts from renewable sources such as Winds,
Sunlight, Rain, Tides, Waves, Geothermal heat…etc. Normally renewable energy
provides energy for four different areas. They are electricity generation, air and water
heating/cooling, transportation, and rural (off-grid) energy services. Many European
countries generate a major portion of their electricity by using renewable energy. A
lot of countries have set up a goal to reach 100% renewable energy in the future. For
example, the government of Denmark has decided to switch the total energy supply
(electricity, mobility, and heating/cooling) to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
In this system, we make utilization of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) for
producing electrical energy, for the street lights on highways. A Vertical Axis Wind
Turbine is a kind of wind turbine where the principal rotor shaft is set transverse to
the wind while the fundamental parts are situated at the base of the turbine.
