Project Title

Utilization of horticulture waste for antimicrobial activity

Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject Summary

Antibiotic resistance has been emerging as an alarming threat for global health. Nature has always been, and still is a solution to all the conventional problems of mankind. Fruit peel extract which has been considered as an agro waste and thrown in to the environment leading towards environmental pollution. Despite these fruit extract contains valuable compounds that have the potential to be utilized as an antimicrobial agent against infectious disease for therapeutic purposes. In the current study, fruit peel waste extract will be prepared by treating it with different aqueous or alcoholic solution. The properties of a good solvent in plant extraction have mainly low toxicity and promotion of rapid physiological absorption of the extract. After treatment the chemical composition of the extract will be determined. Antimicrobial susceptibility test will be performed to analyse the potential of the prepared plant extracts against the pathogenic microbial strains. The extracts are expected to show significant activity against the tested microbial strains. In conclusion, utilization of fruit wase extract against the microbial pathogens can be exploited as an economical, simple and ecofriendly alternative to the standard drugs.

Project Objectives

1. To reduce the environmental pollution by preparing the extract of fruit peel waste

2. To utilize the fruit peel waste extract as an antimicrobial agent to combat the multidrug resistant  microorganisms based food borne infections

Project Implementation Method

1. Fruit waste collection and processing

2. Extract preparation and analysis of compounds present in the extract using solvent method

3. Microbial growth and culture

4. Antimicrobial activties of fruit extract against food borne pathogens

5. Analysis of the inhibition patten of microbial growth using scanning electron microscopy

Benefits of the Project

1. Reduction in environmental polluition by reusing the fruit peel waste  for beneficial purpose in an economical and environmental friendly manner.

2. Utilization of natural fruit waste as an alternative to synthetic  antibiotic would be benefical in treating the diseases by providing a barrier against multi drug resistant microorganisms.

3. Fruits thown in the envionment can be utilized as an antimicrobial agents for therapeutic purposes.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

1. Fruit waste pollutants converted into environmental friendly fruit peel waste extract

2. Bioactive compunds and elements presents in the extract will be analyzed

3. Microorganism iaolated and characterized

4. Inhibition of disease causing food borne pathogens

5. Inhibition pattern obtained
