Project Title

Use of marble dust to increase shear strength of isra village soil

Project Area of Specialization

Information & Communication Technology

Project Summary

Construction of structures on weak soil is risky because such soil have low bearing strength capacity, high compressibility, swelling and differential settlements. Soil Improvement by mixing additives is one of the options to improve the soil properties. In this thesis the current practice is to modify the engineering properties of soil to meet the definitions of design. The compound we use to stabilize the soil is Marble Dust. Marble is a metamorphic rock which results from the transformation of pure limestone. Marble dust is a waste product formed during the production of marble. A large quantity of powder is generated during the cutting process. The result is that about 25% of the original marble mass is lost in the form of dust. Marble dust is one of the environmental friendly additives in the soil; they are cheap, locally available, durable, light weight and ecofriendly. The Marble dust has been mixed by adding 5, 10, 15 and 20% by total weight of the soil to check the effect of Marble dust on moisture density relationship and shear strength parameters. Thus it can be said that the Marble Dust may be effectively utilized to increase (MDD) and (UCS) of the soil.

Project Objectives

1. Determining the basic Geotechnical properties of soils.

2. Investigate the impact of Marble Dust on moisture density relationships.

3. To evaluate the effect of Marble Dust on shear strength parameters.

Project Implementation Method

The techniques and methods of research work has classified in this chapter. The theme of research work has been chosen from literature review, low bearing capacity of soil. A wide variety of laboratory tests can be performed on soils to check the properties of soil. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Marble Dust material with soil for moisture density relationship, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), plastic limit, liquid limit, gradation. To perform these tests Marble Dust of different content (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) are used with untreated soil. Therefore, twelve samples of raw soil with different Marble Dust contents are to be prepared. The raw sample of soil is a reference control for twelve samples which are actually under consideration.

Benefits of the Project

Before starting of any construction project in any area, the first thing that comes to our mind is the soil properties of that area. Soil is the oldest building material used in various ways, for example construction such as buildings, highway, tunnel, dam and tower are found below or on the surface of the soil.

Expensive soil is a unique group of soils that grow when wet and shrink when dry. These soils are considered to have significant volume changes (swelling or shrinkage) occurring as a result of certain seasonal changes, some expensive soils growing up to 10 percent this heavy volume change can easily produce enough energy to cause significant damage to the structure.

Soil stabilization is the process by which soil is transformed into body structures to provide long-term and lasting energy. In the last few decades several types of stabilization, methods including physical and chemical methods have been developed to treat expensive soils.

The current practice is to modify the engineering structures of the indigenous soil to meet the definitions of design. To control volume change in expensive soils a number of methods have been used. The compound we use to stabilize the soil is Marble Dust.

The sustainability of Marble Dust can help to improve wide soil structures and can be used as building materials. Marble is a metamorphic rock which results from the transformation of pure limestone. Chemically, 38–42% Lime (CaO), 20–25% Silica (SiO2), 2–4% Alumina (Al2O3), 1.5–2.5% oxides (NaO and MgO), and 30–32% (MgCO3 and others). Marble dust is a waste product formed during the production of marble. A large quantity of powder is generated during the cutting process. The result is that about 25% of the original marble mass is lost in the form of dust. Its fineness and particle size distribution determine the opacity of coatings. It also presents interesting properties as high whiteness, a low oil absorption, easy dispersibility, low abrasivity, a reduced electrolyte content, a stabilizing effect of pH and good corrosion

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

From the experimental analysis it was observed that.

According to AASHTO classification system the group of soil is A-4

? From the test results of Modified Procter test it was concluded that maximum dry density of soil increases gradually with addition of Marble Dust from 5% up to 20% of marble dust.

? Whereas the Optimum Water Content does not have significant effect on addition of marble dust.

? It was observed that the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of soil increases with the addition of marble dust content. The maximum value of Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) was found to be at 20% of marble dust content.

? It was concluded that marble dust could be effectively utilized to improve the UCS of the soil in this condition where UCS is of high importance.

The similar research shall be conducted on the other types of soil

? The research shall also be conducted to know the influence of marble dust on other properties of the soil like Consolidation Parameter and Drained and Un- drained shear Strengths
