Project Summary

Smart grid technology is the modification of electrical power system from which whole grid transforms into digital setup. All the power is transferred efficiently from generation to consumers. Whole system works thorough a definite electronic structure by using a group of generating sources, transfer the electricity through distribution units which communicate over wireless scheme. The Smart Grid provides with more efficient transmission of electricity, quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances, reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers, and improved security. For proper working or better performance of smart grid, an efficient reliable monitoring and control system is required.

The emerging technology of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become more affordable and practicable in the present era of development. A system is proposed, in which an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and communication system using boarder router will work cooperatively for highly efficient smart grid monitoring. This system will have a base station for controlling transmitted and received data, a UAV which through GPS will locate the meters and move to that location where the meter is installed. The meter switched to the receiving mode, will get signals from UAV and the meter will transmit the data to UAV. UAV by border router will send the data back towards base station and the readings will be received.

Project Objectives

  • Design of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
  • To model smart meters for communicating with UAV through boarder router.
  • To design IOT environment to record energy consumptions(meter readings).
  • To make a base station for controlling and receiving of data.
  • To develop a framework for monitoring of a smart grid by Unmanned aerial vehicle.

Project Implementation Method

The methodology includes:

1. Designinng of UAV

2. Designing of border router

3. Designing of smart meter

For smart grid monitoring through UAV first we must design smart meters then a base station where data will be recorded and UAV. The communication medium between base station and smart meter is Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A signal will be sent by the base station to UAV by using wireless communication through boarder router about the target location. The UAV will fly to that location using GPS (Global positioning system) as longitudes and latitudes are set by the base station where the target i.e. smart meter is been installed. After reaching the target a signal will be sent by UAV to turn the meter on and will respond to the instruction by turning into transmitting mode and data will be sent to UAV. This data will be received at the base station by the UAV. In this way there will be a two-way communication between meter and base station

  • Cost for monitoring can be reduced.(fuel required in vehicles used by lineman for going house to house for recording meter readings).
  • UAV can be used in places where reaching possibility of man is less.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final project will show the movement of UAV to different locations where smart meters will be installed and then will get data from meters using NRFLI2401, and will upload them on internet through node mcu. There graphs will be observed and daily consumption will be noted.monitoring as well as controlling will be done from the web server.
