Underwater Wirless Optical Communication
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryIn today’s world, wireless communication is very common. Wireless communication techniques such as, Radio, Wi-Fi or Satellite are widely being used today. When it comes to communication over extremely large distance such as country to country, where towers for radio signals are not possible to be stablished, we tend to lay a foundation for a wireless communication based on optical method. To make it even more robust, we will experiment our prototype to work at a small distance with some transparent water container in-between to also attain the concept of underwater communication. The prototype is based on using the Infrared Light as the transmitter of the data and the Infrared Receiver as the receiver of the communication.
Project Objectives- Make a prototype that does optical transmission at a small distance (20cm) with water between the transmitter and receiver.
- Cost Efficient .
- Low Complexity.
- For demonstration we will control LED’s, LCD display and MP3 player on the receiving side wirelessly from the transmitter side.
- On the sender side, there will be 4 push buttons to, each button will trigger different LED, LCD Display and Music on the receiving side.

When it comes to communication overseas or land to land with a huge gap of water, communication becomes very hard to be made. It is nearly impossible to establish radio towers at the middle of the sea to communicate and wired underwater communication system is very costly. We need to make a protype that is capable of proving the concept of underwater optical communication using light transmission for transmitting and receiving data under water.
Technical Details of Final Deliverablewe tend to take a step further and change the medium of communication between the Transmitter and receiver to be Water instead of free air and then send data from one side and receive on the other side. Our idea is to hard code few commands on the transmitter side and put some electronic components to be triggered with each different command showing the response. This method works on LOS (Line Of Sight) communication, so if there’s anything in between the 2 LEDs (Transmitter and Receiver), The communication is stopped.
