Solid State Voltage Stabilizer using IGBTs
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryThis is a switch mode power supply (SMPS) type voltage stabilizer for mains voltage. Solid state voltage stabilizer or Static Voltage stabilizer is the stabilization technique in which there is no use of moving parts such as electrromechanical Relays or servo motor. It will use solid state switches i.e. IGBT’s to regulate the output voltages. Its response time will be much faster as compared with existing conventional stabilizers. This type of stabilizer uses IGBT’s so it has extremely high response time.
The system is PIC microcontroller based controlled and an IGBT power stage which will be highly reliable. The microcontroller will sense the incoming AC voltages, on this basis microcontroller will generate the PWM pulses which will buck or boost the incoming voltages and produces the stabilized output voltages. Another feature of this project is that it will use Opto-couplers for the isolation of high voltage side from that of low voltage side. The system will have excellent load protection capabilities with under-voltage and over-voltage cutoff, with an efficiency of over 90%.
Project Objectives- To design a system capable of producing steady & stabilized output.
- Transforming theoretical knowledge to implement hardware design.
- To know about software/hardware integration.
- Recommends the set of actions and corresponding resources that need to be undertaken in order to enhance the effectiveness of hardware.
Firstly we developed the Biasing Power Supply section which is used to drive ICs and all small signal voltages in the hardware system. Then by using a Iron core Transformer we made multiple power supplies to drive optocouplers. PIC u-Controller is used to generate PWM pulses (microcontroller will first sense the input voltages then on this basis it will generate PWM pulses) which then by further processing will drive IGBTs.
During Hardware development, we've are also doing software coding in software named "MikroC Pro for PIC" and barious results are obtained in Proteus software so that we can integrate Hardware with Software.
Presently we've done with the PCB Designing and are about to fabricate the PCB. Finally the final model will consist of a system capable of producing stabilized output.
Benefits of the ProjectVoltage stabilizer is an electrical or electronic gadget that keeps up voltage of a power source in a safe range. It helps to prevent the damage to electrical appliances due to the voltage fluctuations and variations in the line voltage. Its main benefits are in medical industry where it is used in X-Ray scanning equipment, in broadcast for navigation purposes, in commercial industries for power regulations in large buildings and in household items like Fridge, laptop etc.
