Project Summary

Our Project is all about enhancing the functionality of Bidirectional converter and enabling the four quadrant operation in the converter by changing the reference current.

In summary the main objective is to design a commercial product which will fulfill the needs at industrial scale. It will be a four-quadrant converter with a different topology of bidirectional converter used in the market. Our product will play a key role in the following aspects. Our converter will enhance the functionality of a bidirectional charger by adding the ability to provide or absorb reactive power. By real and reactive power we will observe that in which quadrant our converter is working. We will also be syncing the AC with the grid with the help of Phase lock loop Technique (PLL).

Project Objectives

These are the objectives of three phase four quadrant converter.

  1. Four Quadrant operation to enhance the functionality by adding the ability to provide or absorb reactive power.
  2. Using only one converter to achieve two operations (DC to 3-phase AC and vice versa).
  3. To design a system which is locally fabricated and designed to solve power issues. 
  4. To reduce the size of conventional four quadrant invertors using high frequency.
  5. To get higher efficiency and high power factor due to less semiconductor elements.

Project Implementation Method

Project is implemented using fast switching mode operation which is quite similar to the Chinese inverters. Basically, the SG3525 is used to operate the IRF3205 to provide a pulsing AC to the transformer which is iron core. This process is done to get DC of high voltage and current. Then it is converted to DC and delivered to the circuit of three phase ac which is controlled by the code. To maintain the integrity of power we use the SG3525 at 50 percent duty cycle and also use the advance features of slow start. At the grid tie circuit part, we also use the feedback approach to check and balance the output at a specific level. Our circuit also contain the features of current limit and protection for surges by using ACS712.

Benefits of the Project

These are the benefits of our project:

  • Active and Reactive power compensation as pur converter will be opeating at any point of the PQ circle.
  • Low cost with improved efficiency and production on local scale. By keeping the number of semiconducor devices less we get a good efficiency and good power factor.
  • Protection circuits for heat and overvoltage and over current. At most of the points in the circuit we have feedback circuits to have a look on voltage and current.
  • Regulation up till 10%.
  • Local fabrication and decreases assembly cost.
  • Help to solve the issues of energy crisis.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

These are the technical details of the final deliverable: 

  1. Enabling the four-quadrant operation in a single H-bridge topology with the help of controller.
  2. Operational frequency of MOSFETS (IRF 3205): 120Mhz.
  3. Duty cycle 40%.
  4. Soft start and provide full control over variable range frequencies.
  5. Using specific frequency driver to split the DC signal to AC which is approximately sinusoidal in nature with least noise possible.
