Project Summary

The food we consume can affect any form of contamination that may occur due to storage or chemical changes within the food. Some several viruses and bacteria cause food contamination and lead to numerous food-borne diseases, for example, Norovirus a very contagious virus caused by contaminated food or water. Around 23 million cases recorded each year in the whole world related to gastroenteritis and half of the cases are from the US only . This is the most common disease after the common cold; if it continued like this so it might be the next pandemic. About 351,000 people die of food poisoning globally every year. In a country like Pakistan, the majority of people struggle on daily basis for food, due to the preservation of foods, and the use of chemicals to artificially increase the time span of food causes a different type of disease and leads people to illness. In Pakistan, there is a total of 87,000 active patients with a digestive disorder and gastroenteritis. It is necessary to develop a system that can help people to identify the freshness of food or the quality of food items. our proposed system may give good quality (freshness) management in food. It is based on a circuit that consists of biosensors. Biosensors play a vital role to detect bacterial contamination in food samples by taking multiple parameters. Based on the data taken by the sensor, the system will display the result of whether the food is Consumable or not. Each food has a different scale for freshness; which will compare with the data received from sensors, on the basis of this the system will make a decision. It will create awareness in the users about the organic and hygienic food

Project Objectives

The main objectives of this project are:

  • To make an electronic device integrated with biosensors that can detect food spoilage.
  • The use sensors that can measure different parameters of food like pH, moisture, and ethanol level.
  • To give knowledge to a lay man about the food freshness prediction and all the terns associated with it.
  • It will create awareness in the users about the organic and hygienic food.

To save the tested data in the server for assisting the researchers in future

Project Implementation Method

The device consists of a microcontroller Arduino Uno, Bluetooth module, electrical and biosensor like pH sensor, moisture sensor, and gas sensor. The food to be checked is attached to the corresponding sensor and the user can input from the Android mobile application, the selection of food items from the application gives a command to Arduino Uno to communicating through the Bluetooth module. The microcontroller takes readings from the sensor and decides the result with a predefined algorithm. The result is in the form of “Good to use” and “Not good to use” depending upon the food freshness level. The output is shown on an Android application.

Benefits of the Project

The core benefits of our project are:

1) To overcome the rapidly increasing food borne diseases such as food poisoning.

2) Folks will be able to consume fresh food items.

3) Detection of food freshness will be possible in household.

4) It will  Acquaint  a lay man related to the food freshness and the parameters used to detect food freshness,

5) The data generated from the system will be used as a dataset for the researchers to propose better algorithmic approach for food freshness detection.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Following are the tools for this project:

  • Arduino UNO

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform. Arduino boards can read inputs - light on a sensor, a finger on a button, and turn it into an output - activating a motor, turning on an LED. 

  • Bluetooth Module

The Bluetooth modules can transmit and receives the data wirelessly by using two devices. 

  • PH Sensor

The PH (Potential of hydrogen) sensor is used to specify the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. 

  • Moisture Sensor

The Moisture Sensor is used to check the amount of water in a substance. 

  • Ethanol Sensor

The ethanol sensor is used to detect the Ethanol level of a substance. 

  • Smart phone

The smartphone will be used to display the data received from Arduino and it will also use to store the tested data on the server.
