Project Title

The Eye Stick Walking Stick that Sees

Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject Summary

The Eye Stick is one such device with infrared, pressure, and moisture sensor along with camera, and Bluetooth connectivity with a back end neural network engine would best solve this problem. The sensors will be able to detect obstacles on variable ranges set by the user, along with a camera to identify what lies in front and how to tackle it. We will be using some headphone kind of device to make user feel normal and independent, the sound system is to help user imagine and memorize things that are present his way to minimize the feeling of something is missing in his life. The user will have an option to wear the ear device as a whole ignoring the rest of the world or just the single ear plug to learn about the obstacles and to sense the surroundings from the other unplugged ear. Our Eye Stick will include adjusting feature to overcome the fact that all people are of different height and weights, long lasting battery time so that the user can travel long distances easily, portable fast charger installed in the cane, fast response time of how far is the collision and at what speed is it approaching the user so that he/she can take precautionary actions against it and above all our smart cane will be as light as feather to avoid pain in the hands. Sometimes the training of these devices is way too expensive than the original gear itself but, in the case of Eye Stick, training is restricted to only description of stick components and their positions.

Project Objectives

The purpose of this project is to propose a cost effective and affordable solution for the people who face troubles due to some sort of physical disability. The Eye Stick will provide aid to visually impaired people as well as to senior members of the society who face some memory loss issues or partial amnesia. Selection of the Eye Stick as our project, we are trying to help our society by bringing a beacon of light in the lives of our people. The objective of this project is to bring independency, mobility and less reliability of the people depending on others. The technological paradigms covered while the development of this product are very vast and detailed, ranging from basic sensor interfacing, to all the way real time image processing of datasets.

Project Implementation Method

The Eye Stick with infra-red, pressure, and moisture sensor along with a camera together with blue tooth connectivity with a back end neural network engine is being developed considering the latest technological trends and social requirements.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of The Eye Stick are to give following aspects to the blind people:

1. Indepedence

2. Mobility

3. Flexibility

4. Adaptibility

Blind people should also have a sense of being a regular person of the society, and they can execute all the actions that an ordinary person does. The Eye Stick is their aid that is intended to open a world of opportunities from which they were currently unaware of.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Speech synthesis is the artificial production of human speech. A text-to-speech (TTS) system converts normal language text into speech; other systems render symbolic linguistic representations like phonetic transcriptions into speech. Synthesized speech can be created by concatenating pieces of recorded speech that are stored in a database. Systems differ in the size of the stored speech units; a system that stores phones or diaphones provides the largest output range, but may lack clarity. For specific usage domains, the storage of entire words or sentences allows for high-quality output. Alternatively, a synthesizer can incorporate a model of the vocal tract and other human voice characteristics to create a completely "synthetic" voice output. The quality of a speech synthesizer is judged by its similarity to the human voice and by its ability to be understood clearly. An intelligible text-to-speech program allows people with visual impairments or reading disabilities to listen to written words on a home computer. The input for this feature would be a microphone that would capture the voice inputs from the users. Based upon every voice command which the microphone catches an associated task has to executed by the stick.

This is the most basic and highest priority task of the whole project as the core objective of this project is to perform obstacle detection so that blind people can also spend the lifestyle similar to the normal people. The data would be collected through sensors and then based upon the output of the sensors it would be deduced what action the blind person has to perform next. The ultra-sonic sensors would constantly monitor what is ahead and incase of any obstruction the output would be transmitted over the headset or the buzzer. The pressure sensor or the IR sensor would be monitoring the texture and structure of the path on which the blind person is moving and could inform whether there is a possibility of a curvy path or not.

Person can identify someone walking in front of him/her if he/she is present in the dataset. This might not be the very basic functionality of the project but a medium priority would be awarded to this features. The data would be collected through the cameras present on the stick that would continuously be monitoring the environment. After successful recognition from the backend servers and associated clouds the output with the name or specific attributes of the person recognized would be transmitted over headset connected via Bluetooth.
