Supervised Handwriting for Kids
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryEarly childhood handwriting is often overlooked and sometimes neglected in the third world countries like Pakistan where a teacher teaches around 50-100 students in a class. At early stages (4-6 years) a kid needs a lot of attention of the teacher especially for writing correct alphabets with standard stroke sequence. A teacher cannot give proper attention to all the students at a time to observe the stroke sequence. The teacher dictates few characters, the students (kids) write those characters, and then he/she marks whether the written characters are correct or incorrect. He/she can only investigate whether a character written by a student is correct or incorrect. He/she cannot investigate whether the stroke sequence adopted by a student was correct or incorrect. It is quite possible that a character is written correct, but its stroke sequence is not according to the standard stroke sequence. Each character and each word in every natural language has a standard stroke sequence that must be followed for quality handwriting. In this project, we propose a camera-based computer system that observes the stroke sequence of few Urdu alphabets written by a kid, and reports whether the adopted stroke sequence was correct or in correct. Our system works in two steps: 1) when a student writes a word, it captures its video and predicts the written alphabet; 2) after the written alphabet is identified/classified, it matches the stoke sequence adopted by the student with the standard stoke sequence of that alphabet.
Project ObjectivesIt takes too much time for the teacher to check every student whether he is writing the alphabet right or wrong. The parents also not be able to give proper attention to monitor the writing activities of the kid due to their busy life. In this scenario, it is very convenient if a system helps the in supervision for kid writing activities and shares the writing activities report to the parent and teachers. This research introduces a technology assisted tool for Urdu language learning in early childhood. It will provide the teacher a systematic way to fully supervise every student.
Project Implementation MethodIn this project we used classification technique to check the pattern of input video by using machine learning algorithms. This is a researched base project with core code of image classifier whether the child has written required letter by following the right pattern or not.
Given that:
A= {Set of Urdu alphabets}
V= {Video of character being written}
Objective:
The task is to classify the characters for pattern recognition.
Output:
To predict whether the pattern (stroke sequence) of character being written is right or wrong.
Character Recognition:
If the alphabet is recognized by the system as one of the alphabets of Urdu language, then it will start recognizing its pattern (stroke sequence).
Pattern Recognition:
Once the alphabet being written is recognized by the system it will then start working on the recognition of its stroke sequence to predict whether it is being written correctly or not.
Benefits of the ProjectOn the completion of this project teachers will be able to:
- Supervise the children having autism. To minimize the issues a system is proposed that will help the teacher to supervise all the students thoroughly/explicitly and those students who require detailed supervision.
- In this way a teacher would not have to go to every kid individually to check whether he/she is writing the alphabet correctly or not.
- Because of the report that will be generated once the system has done its supervision regarding the writing patterns of the alphabets, the teacher will directly go to those kids for whom the report will say that they are writing the alphabets with the wrong pattern.
User will write urdu letter, system will recognise the character and stroke sequence, if the user is writting correct or not.
