Study on the role of Curcumin in the Prevention of Antipsychotic Drug-Induced Diabetes Mellitus in the Animal Model of Rats
It has been reported that the antipsychotic drugs which are used by the schizophrenia (or bipolar disease etc) patients are causing diabetes mellitus after a time period. Although these medications are good in curing suicidal behaviours etc. but they have adverse side effects one of which is Diabetes Mellitus. Curcumin has been reported to protect beta cells of pancreas thus blocking the adverse effects of such antipsychotic drugs and protect the person from diabetes caused by them.
So the project revolves around do the antipsychotic drugs cause diabetes mellitus after chronic use of it (3-4 months)? What should be the dose of the drugs and curcumin? And how/can curcumin protect the beta cells from antipsychotic drugs harmful effects.
1. To examine the effect of chronic use of Clozapine and/or Olanzapine on the blood glucose levels
2. To test the effect of chronic use of Clozapine and/or Olanzapine on insulin levels
3. To find out the effect of chronic use of Clozapine and/or Olanzapine on the lipid profile
4. To test the effect of chronic use of Clozapine and/or Olanzapine on the body weight
5. To check the effect of Curcumin in protecting the beta cells.
The project implementation method includes to give the animal model of rats antipsychotic drugs along with the curcumin so that they won't be diabetic and will be protected from the adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs. If the research proves so, then people can use antipsychotic drugs and safe dose of curcumin to protect themselves from diabetes mellitus.
Benefits of this research project includes:
1. People/doctors would be aware of the safe dosage of the medication
2. If the research proves that curcumin protect beta cells then using a specific dose of curcumin along with antipsychotic drugs will safe people from being diabetic
3. Proving the fact that antipsychotic drugs do have adverse effects
4. Awareness of the beta cell protection function of Curcumin
5. People can safely consume antipsychotic drugs without the fear of having diabetes mellitus.
To make the use of antipsychotic drugs safe for people with schizophrenia, bipolar or similar diseases. If the antipsychotic drugs cause diabetes mellitus and curcumin protect the beta cells of the pancreas from being damaged by such drugs then using antipsychotic drugs along with curcumin would make it possible for the people to use the safe dosage of the drugs and curcumin without getting or having the fear of diabetes melllitus.
