Based on the recently published report by East Coast High School, about 49% of students are facing stress due to intellectual disability, teachers and other student’s rough behavioral problems, inferiority complexity, parenting stress, competenceetc. It is unavoidable as it leads to hazardous health diseases even to death. Most of the time parents do not realize that whether their children are under stress or not unless they are assaulted by mental or physiological issues. So, we aim to provide a device prototype with a mobile application that will monitor stressful condition of school going children along with a body temperature. Thisprototype will monitor child’s psychological condition by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) and body heat temperature to determine if child is stressed. Heart Rate Variability is a measure which indicates the variation in your heartbeats within a specific timeframe. Moreover, Chronic stress and exposure to emotional events can cause a psychogenic fever. This means the fever is caused by psychological factors instead of a virus or other type of inflammatory cause. In some people, chronic stress causes a persistent low-grade fever between 99 and 100?F (37 to 38°C).therefore, this study keeps eye on the baby temperature during stress for better health.  Mobile application will keep track of stress levels of child at different situation. Then we can extract from history to find out particular class or time when the baby gets stressed.

Project Objectives

Feelings of stress and anxiety are a part of life. Some levels of stress can actually be good for us, as the right kind of stress encourages us toward change and growth. However, when stress and anxiety exist for an extended period of time, they can become a burden or even a health risk.  Our young ones are suffering from same issue of health risk because of constant stress from school.

Project Implementation Method

Affordance has always been an issue that render some technology acceptable or not. In accordance with our affordability and our requirement we explored some sensors including PPG, High-Sensitivity Pulse Oximeter and Heart-Rate Sensor for Wearable Health, Maxim Integrated MAX30205 human body temperature sensor,EDA,ECG,Pulse sensor,Infrared Thermopile, Bioforce HRV finger sensor to accomplish our task.

Electro dermal Activity (EDA) also known as Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), is the change of electrical properties of skin. Under emotional arousal and stress, body sweats and skin conductance increases. EDA is one of the best and widely used discriminative signal along with the heart rate signal for measuring stress. It gives higher accuracy and costs $2749 (424806.82 in rupees ). 

Electro cardiogram(ECG) records pathway of electrical impulses  through  heart muscles and can be recorded on resting and ambulatory subjects. It costs $492.70 (76137.62 in rupees).

Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors in our devices are used to measure the heart activity by measuring blood flow during the heart’s pumping actions. It costs $75 (11589.85 in rupees).

MAX30102 is an integrated pulse oximetry and heart-rate monitor biosensor module. It provides a complete system solution to ease the design-in process for mobile and wearable devices.

Maxim Integrated MAX30205 Human Body Temperature Sensor accurately measures temperature and provides overtemperature alarm.

We will also need

Arduino UNO because sensors are arduino compatible. 

USB cable for arduino. 

 Breadboard for making our prototype. 

Jumper wires for connections between equipments 

Wifi module for sending readings extracted from sensors to android mobile application. 

Furthermore, we will also use machine learning for analysis of overall class stress levels. We will process each student's Heart rate and temperature and from the results will use matplot.lib to show quick analysis of students and teacher's performance in a graphial form.

Benefits of the Project

Our young school-aged children are immature and inexperienced. Their innocent minds cannot solve problems by their own effort and intelligence. Compared to adults, they have less knowledge on which to base decisions, fewer defense mechanisms, and more fears and fantasies influencing their perceptions. Because of these characteristics, children are more vulnerable to stress and more likely to respond in maladaptive ways.

Most often parents are not aware of their child’s psychological condition unless child is shackled by physiological problems (weakness, illness, headache, shivering etc). Young school-aged children are at disadvantage when they encounter situational stress.

New data from APA’s stress in America survey indicate parents do not know what bothering their children. Children age 8 to 10 say they worry about doing well in school. They also report suffering headaches, sleeplessness and upset stomachs. In fact, more than one in three children report experiencing headaches, but only 13% of parents think their children experience headaches as a result of stress. In addition, while 44% of children report sleeping difficulties, only 13% of parents thinks their kids have trouble sleeping.

Therefore, there should be a mechanism, a way to resolve this alarming issue. There should be a system to keep constant connection between parents and their children. In this project, our aim is to provide continuous monitoring of school going children. There will be a wearable device and an application to notify parents about child’s psychological condition along with body temperature. This prototype will also maintain history of subjects in school, which are bothering children. In this way, cause of stress will be identified immediately and its adverse results on health can be minimized.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final Deliverable will be in form of two android appilcations and one wearable prototype. Wearable prototype will probably be in form of socks so that it would attached tightly to skin to gather readings of Heart Rate and body temperature.
