Stair Climbing Wheelchair

Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary

A stair-climbing wheelchair, sometimes known as a wheelchair stair climber, is a mobility assist device that is designed to help people with mobility problems to get up the staircase with little or no assistance.

A Stair Climbing Wheelchair is a wheelchair having a stair climbing mechanism attached to it. The mechanism is based on the pulleys, belts, chain, and gear system. This portable type of wheelchair can climb stairs at any location. This wheelchair has a joystick that controls the motion of the wheelchair. This wheelchair also has chair self-leveling mechanism during stair climbing, that helps the person to not to fall. Hence the proposed stair climbing wheelchair offers these main features.

Project Objectives

Propose a design of a wheelchair that will increase the mobility and functionality of climbing stairs.

- Making the total prototype as cost-effective ad as less expensive as possible.

- Forming of a wheelchair structure that would carry up to 100 kg.

Project Implementation Method

The stair edge sensor firstly detects the edges of the stairs then the person gives a command from the joystick to move forward the signal from the controller moves towards the motor driver and the chair climb the stairs. At the same time, the gyro sensor gives the orientation, and from these orientation calculations the balancing motor balance the seat of the chair. The controller can also judge the remaining battery power using voltage rating. The controller of this proposed model is Arduino Uno, the motor drivers, sensors, and actuators.

Benefits of the Project

Powered wheelchairs have been in use for many years now, and it is unquestionable that they greatly improve the mobility of the handicapped. Nevertheless, architectural barriers still exist in many cities and buildings, and it is expensive and time-consuming. A wheelchair becomes a useless device when faced with an architectural barrier.

Especially for some patients living in a building without an elevator, it is difficult for them to travel up and down the stairs using a standard EPW. This results in patients staying indoors for a prolonged period of time, which is not conducive to their mental health and physical rehabilitation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The stair edge sensor firstly detects the edges of the stairs then the person gives a command from the joystick to move forward the signal from the controller moves towards the motor driver and the chair climb the stairs. At the same time, the gyro sensor gives the orientation, and from these orientation calculations the balancing motor balance the seat of the chair. The controller can also judge the remaining battery power using voltage rating. The controller of this proposed model is Arduino Uno, the motor drivers, sensors, and actuators.
