Induction motors (IM) have performed the main part of many speed control systems and found usage in several industrial applications because they demonstrate troublefree operation for long periods of time. Induction motor are widely used in many industrial processes due to its low cost, reliability, low maintenance. Monitoring and control of an Induction Motor is important for an industrial automation.
The advances in controller and power electronics have permitted the implementation of modern techniques for induction machines. There are many micro controller used in the industries like 8051, PIC and Arduino but now a days many industries use PLC for automation due to their ?exibility, simple wiring and easy to troubleshoot because of the communication capability, high reliability with lower cost the PLC are used for an industrial automation. The project is about controlling the speed of an induction motor using variable frequency drive through PLC (Programmable logic controller). PLC is an industrial controlling device and is used to automate machines. An induction motor can also be controlled manually through variable frequency drives. So, the main purpose of this project is to automate the induction motor by controlling the inputs to variable frequency drive through PLC and therefore as a result the inputs to the induction motor will be changed and thus the speed of induction motor will change accordingly.
Working of VFD
It is the ?rst stage of variable frequency drive. It converts AC power fed from mains to DC power. It utilizes diodes, SCRs, transistors.If it uses diodes, converted DC power is uncontrolled output while using SCR, DC output power is varied by gate control. A minimum of Four diodes are required for the Single phase conversion.
DC power from the recti?er section is fed to DC link. This section consists of resistors, capacitors and inductors (Filters) to smooth against ripples and smooth the DC power. The main function of DC link is to receive, store and deliver DC power.
This section comprises of electronic switches like transistors, thyristors, IGBT, etc. It receives DC power from DC link and converts into AC which is delivered to the motor. It uses modulation techniques like pulse width modulation by to vary output frequency for controlling the speed of induction motor.
Programmable Logic controller(PLC)
A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a special form of microprocessor-based controller that uses programmable memory to store instructions and to implement functions such as logic, sequencing, timing, counting, and arithmetic in order to control machines and processes. It is designed to be operated by engineers with perhaps a limited knowledge of computers and computing languages. They are not designed so that only computer programmers can set up or change the programs. Thus, the designers of the PLC have preprogrammed it so that the control program can be entered using a simple, rather intuitive form of language. The result is a ?exible, cost-e?ective system that can be used with control systems, which vary quite widely in their nature and complexity. PLCs are similar to computers, but whereas computers are optimized for calculation and display tasks, PLCs are optimized for control tasks and the industrial environment.
Rotatry Encoder
This instrument is used for measuring the speed of the Induction motor.The shaft of the encoder is directly coupled with induction motor.The rotor rotates with in a fixed magnetic field. So that its rotation induces Voltage propotional to the shaft speed of the induction motor.
Encoder voltages are directly proportional to the speed of the motor. Output of the encoder connected with PLC. The Speed of motor show on the GUI.
For the accurate speed of the conyer belt the role of the encode is very important
Graphical user interface (GUI) use for monitoring and changing the speed of the motor. System will be more user friendly. Different parameters are show on the GUI it can be easily changeable according to the requirement of the user.
VFD allows accurate positioning of the motor speed by continuously comparing with reference speed even at changes in the loading conditions on the conyer belt.
We are working on variable frequency drive which control the speed of induction motor that is already exist but it is very expensive for the control the speed of motor . It will be more user friendly,easy to implement,easy to maintenance and also toubleshooting. Its manufacturing will also be very easily.oue project is based on industrial purpose to reduse to cost of the VFD.The operator can easily control the process.
