Solid State Transformer(single phase)
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThis Project presents the single Phase Solid State Transformer (SST) used in Smart Grid. The Solid State Transformer also known as Bidirectional Converter or Power Electronics Transformer. This converter is not used only as conventional transformer but also used for reactive power control, harmonic elimination and energy storage. The topology of this transformer consists of three stages. First stage which is input stage consists of half bridge the second or middle stage consists of dual half bridge and the last stage which is output stage also a half bridge. As in SST the voltage is step down at high frequency so it has other benefits such as light weight, low cost, low volume and no toxic dielectric coolants as compared to the conventional transformer. At the input we first rectify the Ac voltage into Dc voltage the high frequency inverter convert again into Ac with frequency up to 10kHz then high frequency transformer step down the voltage and rectifier converts it into Dc the low frequency inverter is used to get Ac voltage at 50Hz frequency. Its performance has been verified by extensive computer simulation of the entire system and breadboard testing of several of the key circuits.
Project Objectives- Achieve digital control of electric supply network
- Achieve power flow and power factor control
- Reduce transformer weight and size
- Reduce voltage regulation
- Lessen the losses
Many different typologies, configurations, systems, applications, and uses of SST technology have been proposed and analyzed to some extent. Among these typologies, the most feasible, practical, and practical SST topology is one that consists of three main stages with a rectifier, step down through a medium frequency transformer and a final frequency inverter to regenerate the line frequency AC.
Benefits of the ProjectThe SST operates with an intermediate DC energy storage capacitor from where the output voltage is created. The voltage of the DC capacitor can be regulated by the front end converters through a wide range of input voltages. Therefore the output voltage will be immune from input voltage sags and dips within a designed band. The output inverter operates with an output voltage control loop, implying that the output voltage will be regulated throughout the load range. This results in a near perfect voltage regulation. The output voltage will also be pure sinusoidal and free of power frequency harmonics, regardless of input voltage shape.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe Input Voltage of SST is 1200V and the output voltage is 220 V 50Hz AC. there is also DC output supply for Energy Storage.
USE of ferrite Core and high frequency reduce the size ,weight and Power losses include core losses, copper losses, eddy current lossses.
