Pure drinking water is considered one of the serious challenges for humans around the world. Global warming, pollution, limited water resources and over population have driven this challenge to the peak. Unsafe drinking water leads to serious diseases viz. typhoid, kidney disease, diarrhea etc. Unsafe water sources are responsible for 1.2 million deaths each year [1]. Whereas, 29% of the world (2.1 billion people) do not have access to safe drinking water. [2]

Considering the challenge and making sure the purity of water, there is a demand for efficient and better methodologies to monitor water quality.  It is a two-phase project where firstly the system will contain filtration equipment that will filter the used water whereas the second phase will be an ICT component-based system that monitors water quality (along with other properties) of the filtered water in the first phase. We will design and build a tank that stores the used water at home or workplaces and it passes the used water from various stages to make it useable again.  First, we focus to make the water reusable for non-drinking purposes such as washing kitchens, floors, cloths, and car wash.

It consists of a raspberry pi board which will be powered by ‘Waveshare Power Management HAT for Raspberry Pi’. We will use some sensors for the measurement of the physical and chemical properties of water such as pH level (how acidic/basic is water), temperature sensors for checking the hotness and coldness, water level sensor to check the level/amount of water in a container.

The main objective of this project is to recycle the used water and ensure the distribution of pure water by analyzing its different
chemical and physical properties. Other objectives are:

  1. Understanding all the required tools (including the needed sensors) for the system.
  2. Design the water tank. We convert the ordinary tank to a specialized tank to pass the used water from various phases.
  3. Purchasing the required tools for the system.
  4. Installing the system in a real-time environment to collect the unused water to see the implication of the system in real-time.
  5. Treating the recycled water filtered water and display the information to the user about the level of the water
  6. Storing the obtained data in a database for future record keeping and further analysis.

Project Implementation Method

  1. This proposed system consists of two phases wherein phase one we install filtration equipment in order to filter the used water whereas in phase two we use some ICT components such as Raspberry Pi.
  2. We will convert the ordinary water tank to a specialized water tank to pass the water from various phases.  The used water will first be stored in this tank and the processed and filtered water will come out from the tank.
  3. Model B processes the physical and chemical data with the help of the interconnected sensors. Such as temperature sensor (LM35 IC) measures the hotness and coldness of the water, pH level sensor to check the hydrogen-ion (Acidity and alkalinity of water.), water level sensor to check the water level in a container.
  4. The water level in a container will be divided into Low, High, and Medium.  The system will generate alarm sounds when the water level is minimum or when it overflows.
  5. The data will be collected from these all sources and will be stored in a database for further record-keeping and analysis.

  1. Recycle the used water to save water which is getting expensive day by day
  2. This system ensures the filtration of used water and its distribution by analyzing the processed data.
  3. It can be used for commercial purposes and if enhanced for industrial and agriculture as well.
  4. It filters the used water and centralizes the monitoring of water quality with almost no human involvement.
  5. It informs the user about the level of water without physically checking the container
  6. It is efficient, affordable and easy to use.
