Smart Waste Sorting And Monitoring System
Pakistan is facing the problem of solid waste management. Especially Karachi where trash is wasted as it is burnt.
The recyclable trash is highly wasted or people are hired to sort recyclable trash per day.
The Smart Waste Sorting And Monitoring System is an effective way to sort out garbage that is thrown on a daily basis. It sorts garbage as Metal, Plastic, Organic and Other. It comprises of four compartments for the respective categories. Each category is represented by a color code i.e Red for Metal, Blue for Plastic, Green for Organic and Yellow for Other. The sorting is done by using sensors namely a variety of proximity sensors.
There is a monitoring system which prevents overflow in each compartment. When the trash reaches a certain level, a text is generated to the concerned authority to empty out that compartment.
A Coming-of-Age method to sort out recyclable material from the bins daily is what we need and the revenue generated from selling the recyclable garbage to the recycling industry
The Smart Waste Sorting And Monitoring System is a stand-alone bin with a rectangular outer structure and an inner rotating cylindrical structure that is equally divided into four compartments.
The codings are done with the help of Arduino software as Arduino Mega is used for its ample number of pins.
The circuits are designed on Proteus 8 Professional due to its feasibility.
In order detect different materials, each type is tested separately before combining them altogether.
Inductive proximity sensor is used to detect metal, Capacitive proximity sensor is used to detect Plastic and Organic separately.
For the calculation of initial position of the bin, four IR sensors are used along with two obstacles placed on the circular rotating bin.
In order to rotate the bin at desired speed, monster motor controller shield is used with the power window motor.
The detection of level in each compartment is done by an ultrasonic sensor (four altogether), when a certain level is reached the GSM module generates a text to the feeded number that 'The ---- bin is full'.
This project runs on 220V/50Hz single phase supply, the performance may hinder with no supply provided.
The structure stands on four wheels which make it easier to transport. The structure of the bin is made from 18 gauge Mild Steel so that it can bear the weight of the garbage inside. Each compartment has a capacity of 15 litres.
The sensors are placed on the flap which takes-in the thrown trash. This is done for maximum accuracy in detection of material.
A servo motor is fixed with a lever for the flap to open and close.
The Other compartment is kept at default position, whenever any material is detected the power window motor rotates clockwise until the required compartment is under the flap.
The motor rotates counter-clockwise to come back at its initial position.
The initial position is set by creating a logic with four IR sensors places on the legs of the structure while there are two obstacles placed on the circular bin which help in creating the desired logic.
For monitoring of compartments, each compartment has a overhead ultrasonic sensor for level detection. The ultrasonic sensors via Arduino Mega help the GSM module to send text to the authority whose number is pre-fed in the code.
