Smart Soil Monitoring System is IoT-based system significantly designed for agricultural sector in order to increase monitoring and achieve maintainability in crops on field site with the help of wireless sensors. In this project we are aim to use different sensors to collect data from field site such as weather (Humidity, Rain), moisture level, fire flames in case of any natural phenomena, water level in crops (especially in a rice field) and fertility of soil and display this data on Android and Web based application (which is especially designed in both English and Urdu language to overcome the language barrier for the farmers) with the help of Esp8266 WIFI module which works worldwide. This app will generate the real time sensors data and alert messages to farmers and owner of the land. This system will save a lot of time and efforts of the Farmers as Wireless sensor networks are used for monitoring the field’s soil conditions and already detects the soil fertility(whether this soil is suitable for plantation or not ). This app will also helpful in monitoring the current water level of any crop e.g Rice crop. This project will reduces the risks of big loss which is caused by fire flames which is usually a natural phenomenon. It also generate alert messages in case of natural disasters like rain and the wind as Farmers take the Precautionary measures on time. This IoT based technology lessen the burden on farmers and saves a lot of time and also minimizes the cost,increase productivity and reduce the risks of big loss as compare to traditional farming.

Project Objectives

In order to overcome the mentioned challenges to the Farmer. We aim to develop a system called “Smart Soil Monitoring System” Primary goal of this project is to lessen the burden on farmers also enhance the productivity and cost efficiency. In this Project/System we will maintain a network of sensors which is connected with an Arduino board which generates a data and send this data to the android app with the help of wireless module and rest API. With the help of this system farmers will be able to check the moisture level of the soil and take counter measures. It also generate data about the PH (Fertility level) of the soil which is very useful to detect which type of crop is suitable for this soil. It generate an alert message if the rain and wind reached the alarming level so farmer can take the precautionary measures It also generate the accurate reading of water level in a rice field which increase the productivity of rice-crops. It also send the alert messages if flame of fire detected in crops with the help of flame detector. By analyzing the weather conditions of next 24-hours for example in case of rain farmers will make a better strategy for irrigation purpose which saves lot of water. According to government allowance farmers can use water supply from canals for 1 day with 9 hours constant supply only in a week. With the help of this system farmers can use this water supply efficiently without any wastage by analyzing the current water and moisture level of crop on real time. It also aware the owner of field from the present condition by generating data.

Most Focused Objective:

  7. To make better strategies for irrigation by knowing the weather conditions of next 24 hours.
  8. To report the owners of fields about the present condition through android app.
  9. To remove the barrier for the owners of the land living in an urban areas.
  10.  To ensure the normal growth of crop by appropriate watering.


 

Project Implementation Method

For the development of this Project we will use Iterative model as a process model. Because in this project the requirements are some what clear but still there is a need of changes as per requirement. This project will espically design for Farmers so change in requirements can be consider accordingly. Firstly we will provide the first version of System then if there is any change required then after certain changes we will release the new version of the system .With the help of this process model we can detect the defects and faults at early stage and increase the efficency of the system.

Benefits of the Project

The extent of undertaking is wide. The domain of our project is Internet of things (IoT). The usage of IoT in agriculture is highly recommended and is very effective when looking into long term benefits like good production and automation. When agriculture is integrated in with IoT the data collected in this process will be highly efficient in making more progress towards the improvements of the fields which can save many from financial and environmental troubles. In agriculture sector our project will play a major role. Agriculture sector is a major source of food and raw material for which farmers are totally responsible. This project will specially designed for sake and ease of farmers in order to lessen the burden on farmers and also increase the productivity. Our key milestone is to save resources and increase productivity by gathering accurate information from the specific sensors.This System will cover more than 4050 sqft of area on field site. But there are still some constraints or boundary limits for example if you want to increase scalability its installation and maintenance costs increases gradually. For the implementation of this project we assume that there is no physical and mechanical error in the hardware devices as well as software components we are using in this system. In-accuracy in the results causes inappropriate monitoring which leads to wastage of resources.
