Smart Kitchen Cabinet
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThe project is to develop and design a “Smart Kitchen Cabinet” which identifies the grocery items in the kitchen store. The Kitchen Cabinet is augmented with sensors to measure the weight and level of an item which is updated to a database whenever grocery items are placed or taken out for cooking. The jars in the kitchen cabinet are tagged with Radio frequency identification (RFID) tag for identifying and tracking the location. The system also generates automated list when an item reaches the defined threshold level, which is based on requirement and consumption pattern of family members. It automatically send orders to favorite shops for supplying the ingredients, getting status of your current kitchen supplies, generating dashboard charts for user supply usage details over a month or week giving the user chance to speculate on his/her usage habits. The system also send notification to its users when items will run out.
Project ObjectivesThe goal of this project is basically to create a smart kitchen cabinet. This system incorporates grocery item identification, inventory management of grocery items and automatic generation of shopping list. The smart kitchen cabinet consist of two different sections each leveraging two sensing mechanisms: weight sensing section consist of fixed size container having RFID tag defining container size with product description RFID tag reader, and weight sensor for measuring the level of contents in the container and IR sensor for measure quantity. RFID tag reader, and weight sensor meaning all the contents on that shelf. The embedded sensor measure the weight or the level of the items which in updated to the database whenever grocery items are placed or taken out for cooking. When the items reach the predefined threshold level, the system generates the automated shopping list.
However, we’ll do it on a smaller scale and utilize legal means. Our project will mainly focus on the following objectives:
- Develop a system that automatically and regularly collects and correlates data from smart kitchen cabinet using weight sensors for level detection of item and IR sensor for quantity detection of each item.
- Provide a user-friendly graphical user interface to display food consumption, send notification to users, and get status of current ingredients
To achieve the first goal, we will create a prototype cabinet that will be merger of simple cabinet and our smart iot circuit that holds the sensors with it, different sensors will be used such as Infrared and weight sensors to achieve this goal.
To achieve our second goal, we will create an android application so that The user can interact with the system through Graphical User Interface and set the details like mapping tag ID with the item, item name, the quantity to be stocked for minimum number of days and Shopping interval.
The biggest challenge we expect to face will be to track the user activity and provide a personalised experience… To address this challenge, we will incorporate AI algorithms and will try to achieve the best personalised experience for the users.
Project Implementation MethodWe will implement following equipments on this project:
- RFID (Reader)
- HX711 Module
- Weight Sensor (5kg)
- Infrared IR sensor
- Node MCU
- Burneys
After make proper prototype we will send data to main user application through firebase. User module in application shows login option and after that it will show grocery list button and 2nd item running out button. We willl set threshold specifically and when items comes to that level, name of item will go to items running out page and automatically send notification to its user.
Benefits of the ProjectNowadays, people are very busy in their lives, that is why often they forget about the items which are running out in kitchen, its disadvantage is when guests comes, at that time often no one is available to buy such things which are out in kitchen.
Our project is to identify items which are running out in kitchen automatically, weight sensors detect level and RFID chip will detect which item it is and notify to user through android application before it becomes empty.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe project scope includes the following areas:
- Develop a system that automatically and regularly collects and correlates data from smart kitchen cabinet using weight sensors for level detection and Infrared (IR) sensors for quantity detection of each item.
- Provide a user-friendly graphical user interface to display food consumption, send notification to person, and get status of current ingredients.
- Help people to identify that whether the jar is empty or not.
