Agriculture is very necessary for economy and development of country. The traditional methods are not competent to fulfil it due to the issues like water wastage, improper usage of land, less richness of soil due to over or less irrigation. Similarly, the protection of crops from animals is also challenging. Now, the future of agriculture system can be viewed through Internet of things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is making the labor work easier as well as efficiently utilizing the resources at a minimal cost. However, the existing approaches are either focusing on smart irrigation system or smart protection against intruder for the fields, due to which the other aspect is compromised and the required result is yet uncompleted and not achieved. Therefore, in order to accomplish this, both aspects like, smart irrigation and protection can collectively solve the aforementioned problems and reducing the labor work in efficient and managed way. In our proposed system, we will develop a complete automation system containing two modules that will work on smart Irrigation and smart protection. The main features and objectives of our system are that it will properly use water and land in irrigation and protect the plants from animals. The real time data will be collected from the environment through IoT sensors connected wirelessly with the help of Node Micro-control-unit (MCU) to the main micro controller NVidia Jetson and DC water pump will automatically irrigate field when needed. Considering protection, the animal will be detected and recognized through camera and AI models, which will be avoided by ultrasonic waves without harming them. The on-field computation of the collected data will communicated to the cloud for monitoring the field and inform the farmer through SMS and Mobile Application. Our proposed system will improve automation in smart agriculture system that will adequately use the resources like land, water and soil and also add great value to the existing body of knowledge.
Project ObjectivesProject Objectives
Our proposal has two main research objectives listed below:
- To investigate and compare the existing smart irrigation and protection system using AI and IoT.
- To suggest and develop a system that is collectively performing smart irrigation with smart usage of water, land and soil, along with the intruder detection and avoidance for the protection of field.
- The objective of smart irrigation will be achieved by the data collected through IoT sensors and process through Node MCU.
- The objective of smart protection will be achieved through ultrasonic waves generated by repeller that will be activated immediately after the detection of animal through IoT camera.
Project Implementation Method
The methodology for our system is step wise approach in which we will design and develop a complete automated system. As following the process, we will work on firmware based smart irrigation system that is, the hardware’s output is linked to application, which will provide information to the farmer about farm condition. Irrigation system will be develop using sensors which are soil moisture sensor and DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor and then system will actuate data that is collected through sensors and detect real time animal through camera and repeller will generate ultrasonic waves to avoid it. The whole process will be managed by Slave and Master Nodes. Node MCU as Slave Node will collect data and pass it to Master Node that is NVIDIA Jetson and data will be passed by GSM Module and built-in Wi-Fi.
The recognition of real time animal will be processed through AI model YOLOv5 which will recognize the animal in data frames collected through IoT camera and then the actuator will start repeller in order to generate ultrasonic waves to avoid animal. The ultrasonic waves generated by repeller will not harm any of human and animal but it will resist animals from fields. When the animal will be detected, the device will signal the repeller to start its functionality and after the successfully avoidance of animal, the system will off automatically to make sure the efficient usage of resources e.g. power consumption.
The Wi-Fi network will be used for this system which will pass data to controller devices by sending data to the cloud about the irrigation process and readings of sensors. Similarly, the system will inform farmer about water level of water tank through network. The Monitoring person will be updated about all these actions through text message using GSM module, web and mobile application where the overall information will be fetched from cloud. In this way, our system will adequately irrigate the fields and automatically take actions at the arrival of animal in the field. So, in this project, using of AI and IoT will add efficiency and contribution in automation of agriculture system.

The system will reduce time and human efforts while in this era of automation using modern technology.The system will provide cost effective solution and it will be energy efficient. Moreover, the system will add efficiency to the previous work with the help of AI and IoT. We believe that the proposed project will bring an innovation in the field of agriculture.

The ultimate product that will be achieved after completion of project will be a complete system that will sense the temperature and humidity of soil and will provide water to it according to the need. In addition to this, the system will also provide protection by generating ultrasonic waves in order to avoid the detected animal like boar or pig, which will not be harmful for them. The user will be able to observe the readings from the field sensors on web application, mobile application and by text message.
