Project Summary

One of the most challenging limitations for the elderly and/or the visually impaired people is the inability of self-navigation in unfamiliar indoor environments. A low cost smart indoor navigation system, which is based on mobile terminals, supporting technology Near Field Communication (NFC), and Java program access to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, is developed. The proposed navigation system EYE-GUIDE enables users to imagine the map of the rooms (dimensions, relative position of points of interest). This information is stored in RFID tags in WAP Binary extensible Mark-up Language (WBXML) format. The system allows leaving audio messages that are recorded in RFID tags in Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) format. Voice enabled navigation, that is familiar to users with visual disabilities, is used. We will adopt a a UML design approach to analyze and introduce the functionalities of our system.

Project Objectives

a. Facilitate the insertion of the handicapped persons inside the society and increase their mobility and autonomy using new technologies.


b. Help the blind and impaired find their way in unfamiliar environments.


c. Provide, in real-time, useful navigation information that enables a user to make appropriate and timely decisions on which route to follow in an indoor space.

Project Implementation Method

We require the data of entities on the top floor of building i.e. IGIS, NUST. We will develop a database consisting of description and location about all the objects on the floor. Further machine learning algorithms and algorithms of other technologies like NFC, BT, RFID will be applied on our data. The processed data will be sent to the server from where user (visually impaired) will access it through application and perform a request for navigation to navigate toward any object on the mentioned floor.

Benefits of the Project

They are the thousands of sightless or visually impaired people who possess desirable skills but who have difficulty finding work, or at least work commensurate with their skills. The advent of technology such as this one would be a boon for people with visual loss.no longer would they have to depend on others for small tasks like navigating themselves in an area. This technology revolution would force corporations to rethink notions of the physical limitations on job performance in information processing.
