Smart Home Automation System
The project is about smart home automation system. A home automation system will control lighting, climate, entertainment systems and appliances. It will also include home security such as access control and alarm systems. When connected with the Internet, Smart decision will be taken based on the data stored at cloud and incorporating Internet of Things. Energy metering will also be interfaced. It will help the user to estimate the current power consumption of a home.
A home automation system typically connects controlled devices to a central hub or "gateway". The user interface for control of the system uses either wall-mounted terminals, tablet or desktop computers, a mobile phone application, or a Web interface, that may also be accessible off-site through the Internet.
Our project is mainly concerned with smart lighting, auto humid mode of air conditioners, exhaust fans and interfacing smart energy metering.
Objectives of the project 'Smart Home Automation System' are:
We have used different sensors in the project whcich includes, DHt11 sensor, Light Dependant Resistor (LDR) and the Passive infrared (PIR) sensor. The PIR sensor is used for the detection of motion whereas the DHt11 sensor is used for the humidity and temperature sensing. The LDR sensor is used for the light detection. These sensors are interfaced and the data from the sensors is read by first storing it in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. There is a condition that if the temperature of the room rises above a certain threshold temperature the Air conditioning of the room shall be activated and when the temperature of the room falls below the threshold, the appliance should turn off automatically. Similarly, if the LDR senses darkness in the room the lights shall turn on autoatically, also another sensor which is the PIR sensor detects motion so whenever the PIR sensor detects any motion in its range the lights and other essential electrical appliances would turn on automatically. All these decisions are taken after the data is stored onto the cloud, analyzed there and then read from there.
Also we have a manual switching method that further leads to the remote management of the appliances. This can be done using an andriod-based application.
Energy meter is used in the project for smart metering. That eventually leads us to the end of month consumption of energy and helps us more in conservation of energy. Smart meters record energy hourly or more frequently, and report to remote servers. It will help us get rid of human factor in recording data (meter reader). It will pave our way towards more transparency and automation.
The project Smart Home Automation System has several key benefits, some of which include:

Centralized control using a smart phone.
Smart lighting is a lighting technology designed for energy efficiency. This may include high efficiency fixtures and automated controls that make adjustments based on conditions such as occupancy or daylight availability.
The PIR sensor, which is used to detect the movement of a person, will be used for this purpose. The data will be sent to cloud. That data will be analyzed at cloud. After analysis, a smart decision will be taken, which will results in turning ON of the led bulbs. The data from another sensor is used to detect humidity in the air, that data is also sent to the cloud where it is stored, that data is read from the cloud using Arduino WeMo’s and results in turning ON or off of the AC or exhaust fan.
Smart energy meter will also be used in this project. It is an electronic device that records consumption of electric energy and communicates the information to the electricity supplier and user for monitoring and billing.
