Project Summary

Vital monitoring system allows continuous monitoring of patient vital signs, support decision making among medical personnel and help enhance patient care. This system consists of devices that measure, display and record human’s vital signs, including body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and other health-related criteria. Moreover, there shall be a fall predictor to predict the sudden change in the movement of the patient.  To improve the accuracy of fall prediction there shall be a camera to monitor his fall.

This project proposes a system to monitor the patient’s conditions by monitoring the body temperature, pulse rate and his fall. The system consists of a pulse rate monitoring software and a wearable device that can measure a subject’s temperature and pulse rate only by having it placed on his wrist. The device is able to record the measurement data and interface to PC via Arduino microcontroller. The recorded data can be viewed as a historical file or can be archived for further analysis on the web/Android part to call for help and make appointments.

Project Objectives

The goal includes a way of demonstrating a health monitoring system and ideas on how it can be used in real life by medical personnel and patients. Main focus involves working on a monitoring system beyond any demonstration phase and developing an app/website that can be used by a person to keep check of his vitals.

The objectives of this project include:

1) To make a wearable digital vitals monitoring sensor, that can be placed on wrist.

2) To devise a system that records data and maintains data for future use.

3) To call for help in emergency situations, in case the condition of the patient declines.

4) To make appointment with doctor based on record of vitals

5) To build a platform for a patient to check his past record and maintain his current health.

Project Implementation Method

This project consists of many different modules such as pulse, blood pressure, temperature, gravity fall, android app, Database etc. Each module is researched, then designed according to project, implemented, deployed after testing evaluation and waits for a feedback and then further project is planned accordingly.

Prototype process model is opted for this project after looking at the workflow of the project. This process model is considered best for this type of project where we need feedbacks and implementation continuously. Software prototyping is the activity of creating prototypes of software applications, i.e., incomplete versions of the software program being developed.

Benefits of the Project

The monitoring of patients within a clinical setting is changing; new market entrants, new business models and the IoT revolution are providing more insight into the patient condition through novel data feeds and analytics

These changes require us to re-think our traditional approach to the development of patient monitoring technology and to ensure we harness the technical enablers safely and effectively to develop products that improve on current monitoring methods, both within and outside of the hospital setting.

IoT has enabled medical monitoring to become more widespread and effective. In the past, patients could only be monitored in a medical facility or under the care of family or home nurses. If a patient decided to heal in a hospital, their vital signs - blood pressure, temperature and heart levels - could be monitored by healthcare professionals. But if a patient decided to heal at home in the care of family, they risked not being able to immediately detect complications from illness and disease.

With IoT technologies remote patient monitoring devices, patients no longer need to choose between living independently and feeling safe should health emergencies occur. With the consistent monitoring provided by IoT technologies and real time alerts, patients and their family have a sense of security even if the patient decides to be at home.

The future seems secure and effective for people adopting modern ways for monitoring their vitals. This shall not only help them have daily updated but also assist them with keeping track of it and monitoring their health in a better way.
