Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryHome automation is the residential extension of building automation. It is automation of the home, housework or household activity. Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security. Home automation for the elderly and disabled can provide increased quality of life for persons who might otherwise require caregivers or institutional care. The popularity of home automation has been increasing greatly in recent years due to much higher affordability and simplicity through smart phone and tablet connectivity. The concept of the & quote; Internet of Things & quota; has tied in closely with the popularization of home automation.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of this work is to design and implement a low cost wireless smart home system. The system will be developed to enable controlling various devices via radio frequency. A main feature of this system is that it will uses the regular home appliances/devices with no or minimal modification.
- The user interface system that will take the commands
from the user
- The communication system that carries the user
commands to the terminals.
- The action taken by the terminals when receiving the
user command from the main controller.
Project Implementation MethodAs mentioned before there are different levels and different options ahead of the customers and designers and the choice is to be made under certain criteria such as: Commercial of the shelf and possible automation technology and custom made prototypes and many other support criteria and maintenance. These trade-offs are the original thoughts of the buyer when they go to choose their product.

Benefits of the ProjectSince the dawn of history mankind has been trying to achieve comfort combined with simplicity, as the goal is so bright it still stumbles with lots of obstacles. A home is the place where people usually relax, spend quality time with their families and sometimes even work on their jobs. Building a home went through many phases, at the stone age it was just a cave but now at the 21st century a home might be just a small place or a huge apartment in a skyscraper that would cost millions. The idea of building a smart home is considered a luxury for now but actually in few decades most of the houses will probably be a smart home in a way or another depending on its complexity, efficiency, and cost.
