Due to the non-usage of the helmet while riding bikes, injuries against road accidents have been increased remarkably. Resultantly, many people die every year across the country. No doubt, a helmet is just like the first line of defense against injuries due to road accidents. So, in view of the above-described situation, the usage of a helmet is highly necessary for human life safety. Moreover, when person gets accident, the family is most of the times unfamiliar with the incident instantly. There is a problem related to the alert that family does not get familiar with the accident location immediately.
According to research in Pakistan (Road Traffic Injury Research and Prevention Centre), 24,360 accidents and 30,274 injuries [1] have been reported. More than 36,000 people (“Dawn”, 2019, February 13) died in these accidents which is remarkably a huge number [2]. These statistics have been made on the basis of data that had been collected from the hospitals that had brought-dead cases. While, in contrast, as per report analysis; wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of death from 70% to 40% [3] against severe injuries due to road accidents.
So, designing a smart helmet is the need of hour. We have made a multi-featured helmet that makes it necessary for people to use helmet to start bike. Automatic accident detection feature along with easy call pick up feature without using mobile phone physically, can attract people to use helmet. The basic purpose is to make sure that the person starts using a helmet. Moreover, designing a helmet having no harmful effects for the brain (due to electromagnetic waves) has been considered as well. We believe that with the usage of helmets, remarkable change can be observed in life savings against the severe road accidents.

Securing the human’s life is one of the main objectives of this project. For this purpose, user attraction to use helmet has been considered as well. Following are the main objectives of this project:
First of all to develop bike start feature in helmet, there is surely a need to make transmitter and receiver circuitry. For this feature, when person wears helmet a signal from helmet will be transmitted via raspberry pi to the receiving end micro-controller. A signal from helmet only communicates towards receiving end if and only person wears helmet. So, this is the methodology to develop bike start feature.
For accident detection feature development, there is a need to do three things:
Accident detection
Accident spot location tracking
Alert sending to predefined mobile number via text
When person will be riding normally, acceleration and tilt angle values coming from Gyroscope will be lower than threshold level. If accident occurs, there is an abrupt change in acceleration (deceleration) and tilt angle values occur. Ultimately both values go beyond the preset value, and it will be treated as an indication of accident. This data is analyzed on the fact that there is a much larger difference in the forces acting on, during normal riding time as compared to normal riding time. After accident detection, current incident location is being traced via GPS. That location is being sent to the predefined number/ICE (family, friends or relatives) via GSM technology. At user end, a text message will be a alert that includes clickable Google Map link of current accident spot. In this project, bike/helmet user does not need any internet for the whole process.
On ride call pick-up feature development is made possible. Rider will connect his mobile Bluetooth with helmet Bluetooth module. If there is a call during riding, then there will be ringing and person will be able to attend or decline call via button, which is placed on helmet. For this cause, speaker has been attached inside helmet.
The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies cell phone radiation as a “possible human carcinogen” due to an increased risk of brain cancer from long-term and heavy usage. We have considered this in our project by doing shielding of helmet as well. For this purpose, basically we’re using Al foil to block electromagnetic waves to save human brain.
It ensures people to use helmet while riding bikes. In this way, bike users do follow the rule that has already been requested by Govt. as well.
It helps family members, friends or other relatives to get familiar about their loved ones in case they’ve accident while riding bikes on roads. In fact, this thing is helpful in taking precautionary measures as early as possible. This has been made possible by easy access to that incident spot, when there comes an alert in the form of text message having clickable Google Maps link.
To attend important/emergency call, user just need to push call pick up button. No need to use mobile physically. Moreover, brain safety from electromagnetic waves is also considered.
