Project Summary

A 2014 World Health Organization report indicates that 20 people out of every 100,000 die in a road accidents per year. More than 50% accidents involve motor bikes and 75% of the registered vehicles are motor cycles according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Survival rate may increase by prompt medical attention at the scene of accident. The goal of the project is to introduce a smart helmet with sensors that can aid the rider as well as emergency response team in case of an accident by notifying about the location of incident.

 

Project Objectives

So our main objective is to 'minimize the number of deaths and reduce the damage induced by road accidents on motorbikes using a smart wearable'.
We focused on making a 'solid' accident detection & reporting platform

Additional features that can be added along with goals.

  • Navigation.
  • Assurance of helmet wearing.
  • Application where client data can be stored and analyzed for future analytics.
  • Affordable product, keeping in mind target market cannot spend too much.
  • Large Scale Compatibility integration like in cars and other vehicle types.
  • Instant reporting to reduce delay time between accident detection and intimation to emergency contacts/services.

Project Implementation Method

This project will reduce fatalities with efficient accident “detection” and “reporting” mechanism. Our team used 6-axis MPU6050(accelerometer and gyroscope), to obtain raw values. The sensor circuitry is connected to the
microcontroller (Raspberry Pi-0W) which takes raw values, runs a python script to detect if the accident has occurred. Finally, the project encompasses an android application. In case of an accident, Raspberry Pi informs the android application via Bluetooth Personal Area Network, which in turn intimates emergency contacts with the coordinates of the accident as well as health information of the affected using SMS service.

Benefits of the Project

There is a huge market for such a product in Pakistan, if introduced at affordable price. We are currently working on our prototype and believe that our final deliverable would create a huge impact.
This would not only help the bike rider in case of a fatality but also emergency services with the exact location of incident and health information of the involved. This can help in reducing treatment times and transporting the individual to hospital promptly; potentially lifesaving, in cases.
Additional features like navigation and bluetooth wireless headphone connectivity to attract customers.
Bottom line for our project goal is to save lives and improve road safety, therefore we believe with the help of government and industrial partners there is huge potential here.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are also 'currently working' on integrating Machine Learning to improve accident detection and reduce false positives. We implemented ‘Random Forest Classifier’ and obtained a resultant Decision Tree for improving accident detection.
