Project Title

Smart Headwear

Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary

An attempt to provide fully controlled and Monitored operations of motor bike through android app on mobile phone through digital sensors and interface connected with helmet through Bluetooth to give complete real information about different  parameters Like , Speed, Fuel, Engine Temperature, Blind spot detection, Incoming calls Alerts, Battery status. Smart helmets can do all kinds of things. The most basic ones have basically a Bluetooth device pre-installed in the helmet. This allows for music, phone communication, and more.

Additionally, cameras are being added to smart helmets, this makes it easy to record your rides so you can share them. This can become particularly handy in the event of an accident. Having a video of the event is always nice. Cameras are also great for V-loggers. You can record your ride and upload it whenever you want.

Cameras can also help provide riders with views behind them or in their blind spots while riding. Of course, this also means the helmet will need a head-up display (HUD) or some kind of display for the camera. A lot of the new smart helmet prototypes and products on sites like Kick starter have these innovations. Another type of technology that I’ve seen is climate controlled helmets. This type of feature is interesting. Right now it adds some weight an overall size to the helmet, but it’s interesting nonetheless. BMW and other Top Brands are providing helmets but it costs Rs100, 000 – 200,000

Project Objectives

It provides ease to the rider that the Rider with Smart Headwear (Helmet) does not need to look on the speedometer that can cause a road accident as it distracts the rider’s focus on the road similarly the same scenario in blind spot while overtaking other vehicles.
The rider will not be distracted by phone calls and he does not have to stop to check his phone for incoming calls as the Smart Headwear (Helmet) will display the incoming calls on the screen.

Objectives

Project Implementation Method

It might seem obvious, but we’d better define what we’re talking about here. A smart helmet at its most basic level is a motorcycle helmet that has some kind of electronic technology connected to it. This technology can take many different forms from Bluetooth connectivity devices, speakers and much more. This kind of technology essentially transforms the helmet from being something simply that you wear into a wearable device.

The technology on smart helmets can enable riders to do things like listen to music, calls, communicate with other riders, cancel out road noise that makes its way into the helmet, and more. The goal of a smart helmet is to make your ride safer, more comfortable, and ultimately more enjoyable. Some basic features are currently already available on helmets for sale, but the smart helmet will get more and more advanced as time moves on and more innovations are developed. Smart Headwear changes the concept of Bike Riding. It provides more concentrated ride as usual. Rider feel relaxed during the road-trip by having complete real time information about different parameters Like, Speed, Fuel, Engine Temperature, Blind spot detection, Incoming calls Alerts, Battery status

Benefits of the Project

Helmets  are  the  first  line  of  defense  against  injuries  due  to  road  accidents  for motorists. In  Pakistan  70-85%  deaths  of  motorists,  due  to  accidents,  happen  because  of  not wearing a helmet

We cannot control the occurrences of accidents but taking precautions to avoid life-threatening injuries due to road accidents is in our hands by wearing helmets. The  major  reason  people  don’t  wear  helmets  in  Pakistan,  is  because  of  their compromising attitude.  They prefer Comfort over Safety. Therefore the problem is to tackle this stubborn attitude of people and make sure that they wear helmets always.
While rider is overtaking he looks on side mirrors if he has the side mirror otherwise 80-90% riders in Pakistan do not have side mirror as it not so trendy. In case if the rider has even mirrors he still has to look into the side mirrors which divert his attention from the Road. Similarly there are some speed limits in particular areas where you need to be in specific speed otherwise you will get fined. To follow the rule the rider looks again and again on the speedometer whenever you are riding on a motor bike you receive different notifications messages, phone calls which distract your attention from the road which can cause an accident or sometimes you are in hurry but you need to stop and look who is calling you and most of the time there are unimportant calls which wastes your time and sometimes there are important calls that you might miss. Riders get distracted through different mediums given below:
1.Through looking at speedometer on the bike.
          2. Through side Mirrors.
          3. Phone Calls etc.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Arduino first connects to Oled Display and Oled displays our projection on reflector in front of human eye. Mirror and acrylic Plano convex lens is used to get display on reflector and the reflector is in front of human eye. We get call alerts by connecting this Arduino to mobile app. This Mobile Application will send Call Alerts to Arduino and establishes a connection between Mobile and First Arduino. This First Arduino will get all data using Bluetooth from second Arduino device then second Arduino connects with different sensors like IR sensor and engine temperature sensor and fuel indication sensor and ultrasonic sensor (used for detecting vehicles).

Arduino UNOR3 (Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P. It has 14 digital input/output pins, 16 MHz ceramic resonator (CSTCE16M0V53-R0), a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started).

Oled display 066inch is used with 30mm acrylic Plano convex lens with a FL of 100mm lens and reflector and mirror lens make head up display (HUD).And also detect blind spot detection with the help of Arduino ultrasonic sensors.

And detect bike speed using IR sensors and also indicate the fuel level with help of fuel level indicator. Mobile phone must have Bluetooth.

A helmet that provide visualized digital speedometer Connected with Ride (Bike). That also detects blind spot while other vehicles are overtaking. It has a visual fuel unit. And current status about engine temperature & incoming calls alerts are displayed
