And hence to measure the consumption of electricity by a user, we use electrical meters. In this regard we face many problems. The people or users of electricity complaints that the meter readers do their billings without following the meter readings. And theft of electricity is also a major problem, electricity department’s facing. As well as billing in far areas by reaching every meter and then reading the consumed units is also a problem for meter readers. So we are proposing a technical solution of all these problems. We are going to make a smart electro-meter which will measure the consumption of electrical units and then send it digitally to the base station. And at the back-end the department can measure the consumption of electricity by a meter on weekly or monthly basis in a web-based system. In that web-based system the administraion of electricity department can check the consumption of electricity by a specific user using his unique id or reference number, compare the usage of electricity of different months by a user etc.
One more thing that is optional within this project that the web-based system will be able to auto generate the bill against a specific user id on the basis of its monthly consumpption of electricity. And hence the user may get its bill online by logging into his account.
Hence chances of electricity theft will be reduced and the billing process will be improved as well.
Project ObjectivesThe main objectives of this project are
1- To make the billing process easy and accessible
2- To reduce the electricity theft
3- To improve the services by using the technology
Project Implementation MethodThe project is an application of technology.
We will integrate an additional voltage ADC into th digital electric meter that will take the Voltages from the electric wires and then convert it into the digital signals that signals will be sent to arduino and we will code arduino to take these signals and then convert it into the proper format. Furthermore the arduino will be connected with a GSM module and the encoded message by arduino will be sent to the base station i.e web-based system of electricity department administration where the message will be deocded by the web-based system and furhter operations will be performed i.e consumption comparison, bill generation etc.
Benefits of the ProjectThere are several main benefits of project as mentioned below:
1- The eclectricity billing process will be improved
2- The electricity theft will be reduced
3- Monitoring for Electricity Department on consumption of electricity will be enhanced.
4- People can easily access there electricity bills (optional).
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe project is a creative idea of the members of this FYP Project and the project is going to be very beneficial for Electricity Department as well as for the public who uses electricity.
In this project we are going to make some changes in the digital meter and going to embed an additional ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) that will read the unit consumptions and send that digital figure to the GSM (embedded in meter) that will encode that figure into a message and then send that message into the web-based base station of electricity department. Where a web-based system will decode the message and extracts the consumed units figure out and further process will be done. A GSM will be assigned with a specific reference number and all the data from all the users of electricity of a specific area, will be collected in a database. The Electricity Department will be able to compare the data of user's previous month and this month electricity consumption. The administrator will be notified by a notification if a GSM is not responding in a specific time interval. Then the billing can be online by auto generating the bill against a user in online website but in this project we are making this functionality as an optional thing. If there will be time for adding this functionality then we will add it in our project.
