Project Title

Smart Blind Stick

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

Smart sticks will be equipped with Ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles, LDRs to detect lighting conditions, and RF remotes that allow blind men to locate their sticks remotely. The blind man will receive all feedback through a buzzer. It is possible to use a vibrator motor instead of Buzzer and advance more with your creativity.
It vibrates and emits a warning sound when it detects an obstacle in front of the person. It also vibrates when it detects an obstacle at the back of the person. It allows the blind person to be aware of obstacles in the way. The obstacle detection is done using an ultrasonic sensor. As well as allowing the user to scan their surroundings for obstacles or orientation marks, a white cane can also serve to alert onlookers that the person is blind or visually impaired so that they can take appropriate measures.

Project Objectives

In this project, we will build a blind man stick that can sense obstacles and potholes so that the blind can travel independently. A smart stick for the blind, as its name implies, is a device that assists the visually impaired in reaching their destination and avoiding obstacles. The HC SR-04 ultrasonic sensors detect the depth beneath or obstacles in between with two ultrasonic sensors.

Project Implementation Method

The Arduino can input and output both digital and analogue signals. A digital signal only has HIGH and LOW, whereas an analogue signal can have an unlimited number of value. The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor works the same way as bats to determine the distance to an object using SONAR.  An easy-to-use package provides high accuracy and stable range detection from 2 cm to 400 cm or 1" to 13 feet without contacting the surface.

It is hardware based project

•    Take Arduino UNO, Buzzer, Ultrasonic sensor, Vibrating motor, battery, switch, and a wooden stick or plastic pipe.
•    Take PVC pipe 10 cm diameter of pipe is 2 cm and take L shaped elbow for making the stick.
•    Cutting on pipe to place the Arduino, battery and ultrasonic sensor and buzzer.
•    Take stick and place ultrasonic sensor on it. Connect the Jumper wires on it.
•    Then place Buzzer on pipe and Vibrating motor inside the stick.
•    Connect the jumper wires to buzzer and Vibrating motor.
•    Do connections from circuit diagram?
•    Place the Arduino UNO, Battery and switch on the stick.
•    Upload the code.
•    After uploading now check for the Blind stick.

Benefits of the Project

An individual who uses this blind stick can walk more confidently than before. This stick can sense the object in front of the person and respond either by vibrating or by using commands to tell the user what to do next. The user is then able to walk without feeling scared. By using this device, the user will be able to overcome their difficulties with walking.
