Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryThe purpose of this project is to create an electronic walking stick for blinds. Visually impaired persons have difficulty to interact and feel their environment. They have little contact with surrounding. Physical movement is a challenge for visually impaired persons, because it can become tricky to distinguish where he is, and how to get where he wants to go from one place to another. This project provides a portable solution (device) that allows the user to interact and feel their environment.
The proposed system will provide an opportunity for people who suffer from a severe reduction in vision that cannot be corrected with conventional means, such as refractive correction or medication and reduces a person’s ability to function at certain or all tasks.
Visually impaired/blind persons find themselves challenging the dangerous paths to go out independently. There are millions of visually impaired or blind people in this world who are always need the help from others. For many years the normal walking stick became a well-known attribute to blind person's navigation and later efforts have been made to improve the walking stick by adding remote sensor. Blind people have big problem when they walk on the street or stairs using normal walking stick. The electronic walking stick will help the blind person by providing more efficient and convenient means of life.
Project ObjectivesThe main purpose of this project is to help visually challenged people to navigate with ease using advance technology. In this technology controlled world, where people strive to live independently, this project proposes an ultrasonic stick for blind people to help them gain personal independence.
Project Implementation MethodIn our stick sensor A and B are implemented on the front side, sensor C on left side and senor D on right side. All four sensors detect obstacle and send the distance to an Arduino module. Then Arduino sends the correct distance to the mobile app through Bluetooth module. Then through the App user can hear the distance in their headphone. The two push buttons are used for sending the emergency SMS to a predefined phone number and the other one is for getting the current location of the user.
Benefits of the ProjectIt is helpful for blind persons to walk alone with using smart stick. They will not require much assistance in transversing through their area. In case blind person get lost, he will be guided to his destination from his current location. The person will be able to avoid getting into accidents due to the supersonic sensor that are aware of the environment obstacle.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final product is able to do the following functions.
1. Detection of obstacle -This is done by utilizing the supersonic sensors that send data to the arduino/nodeMCu which generates a proper response to guide the user.
2. Using GPS location the user is guided to their destination by voice commands. This is also assisted by the microcontroller which reads the users current locaiton and guides them to the next direction appropriate to reach their destination.
