Smart Automation and Surveillance System Using Micro Controller and Raspberry Pi with Mobile Application
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a challenging and interesting research area. The 4th industrial revolution is brought into existence with the help of Internet of Things (IoT). The attractive features of IoT in Smart Home Automation (SHA) system are increasing its demand. This paper presents the design of a low-cost SHA system using IoT based on ESP32 module supplemented with an interesting feature of facial recognition. The facial recognition is designed using Raspberry Pi which adds extra security to the SHA system making it unique feature. The algorithm used for face detection is Haar Cascade Frontal face (for human front face) which is coded in python language with the help of a python library OpenCV. The microcontroller ESP32-WROOM helps to communicate with cloud server, sensors, actuators, and Raspberry Pi. This microcontroller can receive from or send data to Adafruit MQTT server whenever any change or update is made in the sensors value connected to it. The results achieved is to control the various home appliances and lighting system using ESP32, and an advanced feature of facial recognition is added to enhance the security which is done using Raspberry Pi. These features can be easily controlled using an android application through which different devices and security can be made steadily available sitting in any corner of the world.
The whole system is based on a microcontroller ESP32 along with Raspberry Pi. Main controlling is done by ESP32 where all the data is first fetched through cloud server than decoded and finally ESP32 execute the information and the communication controlling is being done by the controller itself as it is having a built in Wi-Fi chip. ESP32 module directly communicates with the server named Adafruit MQTT and update ESP32 if any update made or any change detected by the sensor.
With each passing day, the emergence of new technologies and smart devices has become the basic need of people all around the globe. In such a situation, Smart home which is one of the most popular application of IoT, is grabbing attention of the people on a global level. Smart home technology is all about the automation or management of your home and daily life. This could be anything from lights that can be controlled remotely or on a schedule, to connected home appliances for streaming media to multiple screens, or added features to enhance your home security. As the system we proposed not just automates homes but also provides security by adding a feature of Facial recognition which increases its security. In this proposed system users can change number of load as per requirements, and can get full control of their homes through this IoT based SHA system, and can access their homes from anywhere in the world just by accessing mobile application. This system is applicable to not only just homes but it can also make offices, firms, industries smart.
The whole system is based on the following components:
Raspberry Pi is more like a mini computer. The model used in this system is Raspberry Pi 3 B+. The main chip is ARM Cortex–A53 64-bit quad-core with frequency of 1400 MHz and 1GB of RAM. Like ESP32, it also has Wi-Fi 802.11ac/n and Bluetooth 4.2 built in chips, in addition it has Ethernet 1000Base-T port, 4 USB ports, 1 full size HDMI port, SCI camera port, DSI display port, 4 pole stereo output and composite video port, micro SD port and 40 GPIO pins.
Relay Module, the basic purpose of relay is controlling high voltage with low voltage. The working principle of relay is that it contains a coil between two of its terminals which can be energized or de-energized by DC supply, a relay has two states NO(normally open) and NC(normally close) through which current passes to the load or not.
Gas Sensor, we used is MQ2 for detection of methane gas. It detects an increase in the value above its threshold level and giving an output of an analog value.
Temperature and Humanity sensor, the sensor we used for temperature and humidity monitoring is DHT11. It provides a calibrated digital output. The DHT sensors are basically made of two parts a capacitive humidity sensor and a thermistor. It has a basic chip inside that does some analog to digital conversion and spits out a digital signal as output with the temperature and humidity.
Soil Moisture Sensor, is used for irrigation system. Soil Moisture Sensor measure the volumetric water content in soil.
Flame Sensor KY-026, A flame detector is a sensor designed to detect and respond to the presence of a flame or fire, allowing flame detection. Responses to a detected flame depend on the installation, but can include sounding an alarm, deactivating a fuel line etc.
Water Level Sensor, are used to detect the level of substances that can flow. Such substances include liquids, slurries, granular material
Adafruit IO Server, MQTT (message queue telemetry transport) is a protocol for device communication that Adafruit IO supports. Using a library or client you can publish and subscribe to a feed to send and receive feed data. Adafruit IO is a system that makes data useful. Our focus is on ease of use, and allowing simple data connections with little programming required.
