Project Summary

  • Smart adaptive eyeglasses will provide visual comfort to people with the help of the shape-changing technique of a liquified lens with the help of actuators. Eyeglasses will adjust the focus of the lens on its own and the user will add the optical data through applications.
     
  • The project is for people who are facing any eyesight problem. Problems include hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), Presbyopia(lens can no longer change their shape and cannot get focus to the vision), astigmatism(Vision distortion because of irregular cornea curve) and blur vision.
     
  • One of the reasons for having a problem is a loss in flexibility in eye muscle contraction and shape of the lens that helps the lens in the eye to adjust the focal length for a particular object. Due to these reasons, users have to ma glasses according to bimorph as frequently their bimorph changes. This project will deliver the frame with the application through which the user will enter optical data.

Project Objectives

  • The need for Smart Adaptive Eyewear came across because nowadays, eyesight weakness is a common problem in the young generation and through this project, people will get a clear vision, less costly.
     
  • The objective of Smart Adaptive Eyewear is to resolve the refractive error problems that include farsightedness, nearsightedness, presbyopia, vision distortion. Due to these reasons, they have to make glasses according to bimorph as frequently their bimorph changes.
     
  • Smart Adaptive eyewear project is for the user whose optical number changes frequently and are facing refractive error problems, which makes the user change their glasses whenever there is a change in optical prescribed number.
     
  • This product will work as a one-time solution principle and the users will just change their optical number through application.

Project Implementation Method

  • Based on preliminary research, the implementation method is a multiphased process. The objectives defined above can be categorized into two main categories, hardware and software and these are implemented using the waterfall approach.
  • The waterfall model is a breakdown of project activities into linear sequential phases, where each phase depends on the deliverables of the previous one and corresponds to a specialization of tasks.
  • The approach is typically used as it has the following six major phases (each with its own agenda of tasks and issues): Requirement gathering, Analysis, system design, implementation, integration and testing, and deployment. Taken together, these phases represent the path a project takes from the beginning to its end.

Benefits of the Project

  • The project eliminates the need for buying eyeglasses every time the prescribed optical power changes. As it will treat refractive error by using an adaptive device
     
  • The project will benefit people having optical problems like myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, astigmatism, and anisometropia by providing clearer vision.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Adaptive eyeglasses work with the help of application in which user adds their doctor’s prescribed correction in diopter, once the user wears eyeglasses and focuses on particular object, the refractive error and focal length of the object is calculated with the help of wavefront device which consists of CMOS camera sensor, microlens array of 400-900nm wavelength with 150-micrometer lenslet pitch and wavefront device is connected with microcontroller where focal length is received as an input.
  • Application is design in Adobe XD and developed in Android studio using java language. SQL lite database is used to store user data. The data which is taken as input by the user through application in prescription interface will transfer to the microcontroller via Bluetooth (HC-05) and then using formula the voltage would be calculated after comparing user optical data and focal length to move piezoelectric bimorph actuators by providing voltage through LiPo battery which causes the contraction (concave or convex) of elastic membrane. The membrane used above is of thickness 1.2mm and the one below is of thickness 0.2mm which is sandwiched between glycerol of density of 1.26 g cm?3 (liquid lens) and the piston to comfort the vision of users.
