Project Summary

Concept of using robotics dates back to the first industrial revolution. From being used in wars to agriculture mobile robots have leaped a huge advancement in both uses and design. Most important aspect of mobile robotics is exploration. Advancement in modern computer and software technology is an outstanding achievement of 21th century. Unfortunately, this technology cannot be used for exploration. Areas inaccessible to humans demand manoeuvrable vehicles. For this reason the ASL (Autonomous Systems Lab) of the École Poly-technique Fédérale de Lousanne (EPFL) presented the design of a six-wheel vehicle called shrimp in 2002. Shrimp Rover Robot is designed to solve some problems like raised stairs and navigation through tough geographical terrain.

Project Objectives

  1. Drawing a 3D design for the robot using the Solid works.
  2. Find out the easiest method of controlling of the robot.
  3. Doing a simulation for the main circuit and the solid components of the wheel robot.
  4. Use proper and convenient actuators, sensors, to facilities the work of the robot.
  5. A rover which has less complex but dependable control system.
  6. A robotic rover which is more adaptable and reliable than walking robotic system.

Project Implementation Method

We are designing our rover to aid the healthcare workers in working efficiently and with less risk. This rover can easily be adapted to different applications because of its modularity. For disinfection purposes spray hose and disinfectant tank can easily be attached. In an exploration scenario cameras and sensors can be attached on the top and sides of the rover. Manufacturing will be done by using off the shelf products to drive the overall price down. Due to less moving parts longevity is guaranteed. Also, a simpler design makes easy maintenance and repairs.

Benefits of the Project

Application for the shrimp rover is not limited to a single aspect. If used in unstructured areas affected by COVID-19 we can reduce the spread to medical workers and areas outside the quarantine. Due to its small size and capacity to work in uneven places. Geological explorers can also benefit from the shrimp rover. Another application for this rover is for rescue missions where there is a danger to a human rescuer and mine detection for military installations.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Shrimp Rover has six wheels that operate separately. It has 4 wheels on a pair of parallel bogies. It has one front and one rear wheel. Each wheel has a motor attached to it. Using a microcontroller preferably Arduino, speed will be controlled through a H-bridge. Direction is changed by the rotation of front and back wheels with the help of servo motors. In order to control the rover from a distance a radio controller will be used. To view the obstacles ahead a video camera is attached on the top. The Shrimp rover has the ability to climb steps twice the size of its wheel diameter.
