Seismometer
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryOur project ‘Seismometer’ is a type of system that could give indefinitely in one and a half minute depending on your gap from the epicenter of an earthquake warning preceding to earth shaking during an earthquake. The intention of this system is to give alert in earthquake prone area around the world. The alert messages provided by QMS can be valuable to help reduce the destruction, costs and casualties resulting from an earthquake. The purpose of quake management system is to detect the earthquake rapidly. This can only be done by detecting the high speed energy that emitted from the quake which is mainly the P-waves through wireless sensors. By using P-wave information, first we evaluate the location through GPS and then deliver the message to the close by areas through GSM module.
Project ObjectivesEarthquakes are caused by plate tectonics, they can also be caused by shifting of plates in the crust of Earth, the earthquakes take place when the frictional stress of gliding plate boundaries builds and results in failure at a fault line. We have made a project to access the situation with these objectives in mind:
- To detect early seismic (P-waves) through wireless sensors.
- To detect the location through GPS of the affected area.
- To send messages to nearby areas.
Project’s Key features
- Automation is implemented using raspberry pi for weak and strong motion sensors.
- Another feature of our project is that it is capable of detecting earthquake P-waves and determine the location through GPS and send warning messages to nearby areas.
- The project is economical.
- The project displays and prints data in real time.
- Raspberry pi stores data for further use.
Earthquake Alarm Systems can give alert of earth shaking during an earthquake. The objective is to quickly determine the initiation of an earthquake, estimate the magnitude of ground shaking to be predicted, and issue an alert before some serious damage is caused by ground shaking starts. This can be done by detecting the first energy to radiate from an earthquake, the P-wave energy, which rarely causes damage. Using the arrival time of the P-wave at the surface and the frequency content, Alarms estimate the location and the magnitude of the earthquake. The anticipated ground shaking across the affected region is then estimated using empirical attenuation relations. The methodology can provide warning before the S-wave arrival which usually causes most of the damage.
Shake alert rapidly detect the initiation of an earthquake, estimate the level of ground shaking to be expected, and issue a warning before significant ground shaking starts. This can be done by detecting the first energy to radiate from an earthquake, the P-wave energy, which rarely causes damage. Using P-wave information, we first estimate the location and the magnitude of the earthquake. Then, the anticipated ground shaking across the region to be affected is estimated and a warning is provided to local populations. The method can provide warning before the S-wave, which brings the strong shaking that usually causes most of the damage, arrives.
