Project Summary

In regards to the currently ineffective waste management and road management authorities, it has prompted an innovative technological intervention to not only target road maintenance but as well as the self-declared ill-equipped waste management authorities. With the help of state-of-the-art Machine Learning and Neural Network driven Image Processing. The idea is a brand new, modularized approach to develop a mechanism to place tag marks on maps using Google Maps API. These tag marks will indicate a road segment that has been

  1. deteriorated or damaged,
  2. congested with litter
  3. logged with sewerage

This algorithm, when incorporated in the android powered gadgets, will be able to detect these handicaps using a mounted camera.

Project Objectives

  1. Develop an android based consumer application to be used with the mounted camera to detect road impediments
  2. Connect road maintenance authorities together via the application
  3. Utilize ML or DL, Computer Vision and Image Processing techniques to recognize water logging, broken roads and trash heaps on road sides with the help of camera.
  4. Flag the affected road segments with Google Maps API and provide a user-friendly graphical user interface to display the flags on maps and to set a course to these locations.
  5. Use Data Science to estimate cost of management tasks. Recommend optimization.

Project Implementation Method

To achieve the first goal, we will:

  • Utilize Java Language to develop Smart Phone application supported by Android OS.

To achieve the second goal, we will:

  • Utilize Database management tools to setup profiles for Users of different categories i.e., Authorities and Customers, to differentiate between the accountability factors of both users and to centralize the employee database in management authorities.

To achieve our third goal, we will:

  • Apply Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Image Processing with datasets and Neural networks in order to detect garbage heaps, water logging and broken roads at a reasonable accuracy.

To achieve our fourth goal, we will:

  • Integrate Google Maps API with the Android application.

To achieve our fifth goal, we will:

  • Data Science helps to extrapolate time and fuel costs by using Machine Learning and predictive analytics techniques from previously acquired data. Data of truck’s empty/load trip frequency, loading capacity and assigned zone’s garbage generation will be analyzed and compared with the entire fleet to produce recommendations.

  • As disease causing pathogens from garbage are rising causes of health jeopardy. By efficiently targeting the right areas, waste management’s efforts can be optimized.

  • The repairing of roads will cause a massive improvement in traffic. As the roads become liberated from the calamity of litter, they will sustain more traffic
  1. Waste-Management
  • agencies will focus their efforts more efficiently since targeted action will be possible with bird’s eye view.
  1. Carbon Emission Reduction
  • Collector Dump Trucks will be able to minimize emptying and loading trips by making targeted approach.
  1. Evolutionary Potential

After Success of this endeavor to flag points on maps, it is possible to mechanize the whole waste management authority by replacing collector trucks with drones

The major factors that deteriorate road’s quality are:

Since the Industrial revolution, the world has seen an elevated production of land waste and pollution. With the technological advancement and exploitation of natural resources, mass urbanization and population explosion, the land waste problem became a global epidemic.

Waste can be almost anything, including food, leaves, newspapers, bottles, construction debris, chemicals from a factory, candy wrappers, disposable diapers, old cars, or radioactive materials. People have always produced waste, but as industry and technology have evolved and the human population has grown, waste management has become increasingly complex. So much that it has not only posed a health hazard but also an impediment towards transport sector.

Trash accumulation on road side prevents traffic from being distributed throughout the road, cramping the space as well as damaging health of passersby. In Highly populated countries with low literacy rates and poverty, waste management is a serious problem. Karachi’s waste management authority on a survey had declared it was ill-equipped to tackle the immense load of garbage generated by the city on a daily basis. For instance, it is estimated that 87,000 tons is generated each day, the collector trucks are way too large to fit on smaller roads, road conditions combined with traffic conditions don’t permit the trucks to collect and clean in 60% areas in the city, the trucks themselves are in extremely poor conditions and public negligence is also a major promoter of road side waste accumulation.

The underground drainage system and the sewerage system can become logged on roads due to poor management. This hampers the seamless passage of traffic and promotes health adversities.

The project Roadify can not just change the technique to target affected areas on the road infrastructure but also use an automated drone hive, later on in the future, to completely replace the road management authorities, saving tons of fuel, carbon emission, energy consumption, time and resources, creating job opportunities, biofuel and recycling plants.
