Rehabilitative Stroke Robot for Physiotherapy
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryThe Rehabilitation process of patient is treated by physiotherapists, physiotherapist specializes in treating disabilities by physically exerting some force to the patient's affected hand. The world is progressing day by day and becoming digitized, it has become very difficult for affected patients to take time and go to therapists for the treatment daily as well as current devices consist mainly of large devices causing the therapy become costly and time consuming.
The design of this project aims to develop a robot glove and a robotic hand that patients can easily wear and be used in the therapy of stroke or other medical disorders.Rehabilitative Robot for stroke will be designed and capable of actuating fingers and wrist movements using various motors, the fingers and wrist have separate individual motor which perform separate exercises linked through microcontroller. The project could be further enhanced in various applications such as robotics and automation systems already available in market but are too costly.
Project Objectives- To develop understanding of Arduino Uno MicroController Coding.
- To develop a Robotic Glove which can be used to rehabilitate the stroke patients
- To design a fully operative and actuality based system that efficiently performs the exercises regimen into the movement of robotic hand.
- To design a robotic hand which mimics the exercises performed by the robotic glove.
- To design a mobile based application performing exercises wirelessly into the movement of robotic hand.
- To measure recovery in the patients hand giving results in mobile application.
The main aim of our project is to develop a fully operative and actuality based system that gives user state of the art treatment.
- Software based mobile application will be made wirelesssly controlling the movement of Robotic Hand.
- A robotic glove will be designed having Flex Sensors placed on every finger, which gives variable resistance changes to the Controller.
- A Control box having Servo motors,NRF24L01, HC-05(Bluetooth Module) and microcontroller is made.
- Servo Motors having strings mounted on its tip, causes the movement of robotic hand.
- NRF24L01 wireless transmitter/Reciever is placed in Control box which accurately recieves signal from Sensors and transmit them to Servo Motors which moves the robotic hand.
- Arduino Uno Microcontroller is the brain of project which links every module to other, it needs to be coded perfectly.
- Application designed will consists of exercise regiments coded in it, so one can easily perform exercises by the click of a button.
The Robotic Arm would be capable of doing following tasks:
- Perform exercises at any remote location by the click of buttons which were performed by Physiotherapists.
- Patient can also perfrom exercises by his own working hand and can treat the stroke affected hand.
- A patient with damaged fingers or any skeletal disorder can use the hand to perform daily tasks.
The project can benefit our industry as well as to a common man in following ways:
- Physiotherapists can use this robot in therapy centres to treat patients to reduce load as well as advanced treatment.
- A person with damaged fingers or any medical disorder can use the robot to perform his daily routine tasks.
- A patient with skeletal disorders can use the robotic hand using mobile apllication for performing tasks.
- Time is very important, patients can treat them at their homes.
- The project can benefit in medical Industry in the innovations of new technologies
- The project can also be used in home automation.
The surface of robotic glove having flex sensors placed on it is able to withstand force, pressure and is indestructible. Do not use sticky material to make glove otherwise it will damage the flex sensors, although flex sensors are well covered they will not be damaged easily. Robotic hand is made up of mechanical structure,it should not be subjected to fire or any other damaging material. The glove is washable and stains of any adhesive can be removed by solvents like spirit, acetone and simple water also.It should not be subjected to harsh chemicals and opqaue cleaning materials.
