The scarcity of water is one of the main problems in Pakistan. With the growing population and depleting water resources, it is becoming difficult to meet the requirements. The shortage of water has resulted in the distribution of water as well. The current scenario in implementation is that water is being provided to the consumers at a specific time and billing is charged monthly according to it. There are certain issues in this scenario as the consumers have no availability of water if they need it out of the scheduled distribution time also the billing process is uniform whether the water is used or not.

The purpose of this project is to aim for a solution for the distribution and scarcity of water both in the residential and agricultural fields. The Project has two parts.

The first part is the implementation of a smart strategy for the water distribution where a prototype model for the society water tank will be implemented. The water from the tank will be available to the prototype colony/houses at all times rather than the prescheduled time to give a uniform distribution. The smart distribution system will be completely automated using the embedded technology and sensor nodes with IoT monitoring. The water in the society tank will have an embedded system that will be monitoring the level of the water, the distribution side of the water will be equipped with a flow meter to see the usage of water on the society level. The other part of the distribution is the water tank installed at a specific home. There will also be an embedded system connected with the flow meter. The flow meter will be reading the inflow of the water and the usage will be sent to the remote Billing system through IoT.

The second part of the project deals with the shortage or scarcity of water by making the wastewater reusable through water treatment. The wastewater from different consumption areas of the home such as the kitchen, garage, sink, etc. is collected in a waste water reservoir. The wastewater is checked for turbidity and PH level before treatment using the PH sensor and turbidity sensor. The reservoir is connected to a multi-layer treatment unit. The water is first passed through a sedimentation process where the solid particles are separated. Then it is passed through the filtering unit where small particles, soil elements, and other species are separated. Then the water is treated with a chlorination process to make it clean. In order to make it reusable, the next unit is the PH neutralizer unit where the treated water is adjusted for the desired PH level using an acid-base mixing process. The output from this unit is available for secondary usage such as a garage, gardening, etc.

The Water Treatment unit comprises sensors including PH, turbidity, and level detectors that work as Wireless sensor nodes and send their data to IoT. The main controller is also using the received values and help in the PH neutralization process.

All stages are monitored by IoT. 

Project Objectives

The project objectives are as follows:

  1. Design & Development of water distribution system.
  2. Design & Development of water billing system.
  3. Design & Development of wastewater treatment unit.
  4. Design & Development of wireless sensor nodes. 
  5. Development of IoT-based platform.
Project Implementation Method

The project will be implemented in the following phases.

  1. In the 1st phase, the distribution system will be designed where the level tracker of the distribution tank will be designed and implemented.
  2. In the 2nd phase, the water flow measurement unit will be implemented and the billing unit will be designed.
  3. In the 3rd phase, the distribution unit will be connected and monitored through the IoT platform. The IoT Platform will be Thingspeak based platform and the billing notification to the consumer will be implemented.
  4. In the 4th phase Designing, interfacing, and testing the Sensing module of the wastewater treatment unit will be implemented. These sensing units comprise the PH level measurement, turbidity measurement, water level measurement, and onboard connectivity to the internet and IoT platform. Since we have two sides to the project, there will be two banks of sensors.
  5. In the 5th phase, IOT automation for the water treatment unit and related sensors will be implemented.
  6. In the 6th phase, we will be implementing the prototype structure of the project for the water distribution side. The water distribution process, billing mechanism, and consumer notification process will be integrated into the prototype unit.
  7. In the 7th phase, the prototype for the water treatment units will be implemented. The implementation of wireless sensor nodes, their working, and integration with the IoT will is tested and finalized.
  8. In the 8th phase, distribution and water treatment unit prototypes will be integrated and tested for the final solution demonstration.

  1. This is a novel solution for the water distribution system which can be applied to newly developed societies.
  2. The water treatment unit can be applied anywhere inside residential units, hospitals, schools, etc. to reuse the water and reduce the shortage.
  3. Each user, an equal access to the main water storage 24/7 and he can use it according to its need.

  3. One Set of Fully Functional Billing Units for the distribution side.
  4. One set of fully functional flow measurement units for the consumer side.
  5. Two Wireless sensor node sets each pH measurement unit and turbidity unit for the water treatment unit. One set is for before the treatment and the other is for after treatment.
  6. A complete pH neutralization unit with the acid-base container and an automated supply mechanism according to the desired pH level.
  7. Fully functional and automated Thingspeak IoT platform for both distribution and Treatment units.
