Air pollution refers to the release of harmful substances into the air. The root cause for this air pollution is the energy we use and the production from the industrial areas. It can also be occurred by the burning of fossil fuels that produces gases that are very harmful for our environment. These gases includes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen di oxide etc. These are either deadly or cause severe health effects. We as a responsible citizen should play our roles in reducing the air pollution .The steps can only be taken if we know the percentages of the pollutants in the air for which a system is needed that detects the pollutants and gives us the data. Experimentation is carried out by the using the wireless model using different detecting sensors in different physical situations to record these readings and monitor the air quality in real time. Instead of fixed air quality stations we are going to mount the sensors ona moving object like a public transport bus which will record the readings from different parts of the city in real time. 

Project Objectives

we wish to record the quality of air in real time and give access to the general public to these results so that they can see what is at risk and what precautions shuold they to take to be safe. In a big city like karachi where these conditions are highly unpredictable. Sometimes a bad smell from the sea attacks the city and no one knows what has happend at first or sometimes the city is captured by some dust storm and people dont know how harmful it could be if the precautions are not taken. In short, we are trying to make a wireless network of sensors to provide the public of karachi and the authorities with real time air quality condition.  

Project Implementation Method

we are using CO2, CO and  a PM2.5 ( particulate matter of diameter 2.5mm) dust sensor to record the air quality. Our plan was to use the sensors for O2, NO2, SO2 and PM10 and PM0.1 dust sensor for the project but these sensors were too costly for an FYP. The sensors will send the data to arduino and arduino after processing will send this data to SIM808 (GPS GPRS/GSM) module. SIM808 will send the data over GPRS to a web server where it we be recorded and displayed in real time. After every month or 15 days the data will be plotted on google maps to acheive mapped concentrationsof these harmful gases in the air.

Benefits of the Project

The people will know the air they breath even meet the standards or not. If not what precautions are needed. Specially for infants and old and unhealthy people. The authorities can use the data as well to see the concentration of harmfull gases over time specially emmitted by the industries. The data we provide can be used to see the impact of global warming on the air quality of big cities like karachi. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

SIM808 uses a big supply of current like 2A of current. PTC blocked the unregistered GSM modules which caused the trouble. CO2 sensors (MH-Z14) is programmed to five readings every 5 seconds. Some requests get rejected be the server. we have pay a good amount of Rupees for the onlone database. The programming is all done in arduino.
