Prepaid Enabled Energy Meter Integrated With in House Smart Energy Monitoring System Accompanied by a Smartphone Application.
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThis project is opted because of its diverse nature as it covers many aspects that are necessary for fulfilling those requirements which customers aspire to be housed in a single equipment. The targeted goal is end user customer satisfaction which is planned to be achieved by providing those features which will surely facilitate the consumer by every aspect. The introduction of PRE-PAYMENT OF ELECTRICITY BILL aims towards reducing energy theft and cutting electricity misuse by masses. The project is themed toward ECONOMICAL ELECTRICAL USAGE accompanied by SMART ENERGY CONSUMPTION along with LIVE MONITORING SYSTEM. The user will be able to control home appliances (heavy loads) by means of a mere smartphone thus ensuring efficient and economical electrical consumption. The building process of meter is divided into different blocks ranging from Creating an energy meter to embedding a prepaid system including circuitry of GSM, live Monitoring System with other essential peripherals. The final product is designated to be user friendly among people of every age group.
Project ObjectivesIn this era, the techniques which we are using has an obsolete mechanism which are exposed to certain irregularities that a consumer and utility both have to bear. These irregularities are increasing day by day and effecting country’s economy. The irregularities that a consumer and utility were facing has been minimized to a certain level by adopting the easiest and efficient method which is prepaid system with mobile application. This method not only provide benefit to consumer but also the utility.
Electricity thefts is increasing day by day due to which the utility companies are bearing huge losses. The great amount of country’s revenue is lost due to increasing power theft.
To overcome energy theft, Prepaid system is adopted which not only minimizes the chances of theft but also increases the revenue by getting 100% recovery.
To address reduced check and balance, the prepaid system with mobile application is adopted. The user will be receiving the instantaneous values of meter and hence have the idea how much amount he has consumed and can control its usage.
To rectify issues because of human error, prepaid system is adopted in which there is zero percent chance of human error.
To reduce queue waiting, pre-paid system doesn’t have the due date. Therefore, there are no chances of waiting in the queue. The bill payment can be done through a mere text message.
The project is divided into different stages which on execution will result in advancement towards the completion of the project.
Unit Calculating Meter (Voltage, Current, Time, Power and Energy)
An embed system for pre-purchase of units in the energy meter and making it to Prepaid Energy meter.
Bill calculation of the energy meter.Designing android-based application which will show the instantaneous values of the meter to the consumer.
An intelligent monitoring system that will turn off the heavy load when the credit is less than the threshold value.
The hardware unit itself inhibits an energy meter which employs series of steps that accounts for the calculation of the energy consumption.
the first task is to read sensor data i.e. the collection of the instantaneous values of voltage, current and time via their respected sensors.
The second step indicates the calculation of energy, power. The said calculation is being carried upon by the following set of equations.
After calculation of energy, the costing is done with respect to low peak and peak.
The second stage of the project is conversion of the energy meter into smart meter. And for this purpose, Pre-Paid System is employed.
The following stage includes the receiving of text messages from the GSM enabled device which in our case is the cellular device which is in possession of the utility. Once the text message is sent and the GSM module on board receives it, the text received is decoded and the number of rupees to be added in the balance are added to the existing credits.
Benefits of the ProjectThe traditional energy meter consisting of analog circuitry had been used for more than decades but along with its usage there comes a series of disadvantages that accompany them which includes but are not limited to:
The measurement procedure involves rotational components which are subjected to wear and tear over the passage of time.
For the sake of meter reading, the manpower employed are sometimes vulnerable to human error.
These meters possess less sensitivity which means that they are not capable for detecting minute changes in the load current.
They are likely to be exposed to energy theft.
They are not capable for the measurement of reverse current.
In the postpaid system there are certain things that a consumer has to face that is, the consumer doesn’t have the check in balance, high chances of human error, high chances of theft and other problem so, to cater these problems we have designed user friendly that is prepaid system in which there is very low chances of theft, no chance of human error and the most important is that the consumer knows how much balance he has consumed and also it is better to give smaller payment rather than huge amount and at the utility end chances of recovery is 100%.The enhancement of electrical systems leads toward the growth of technological advancement in the monitoring devices also which is purely reflected in the form of DIGITAL or smart meters. With the involvement of smart meters, the overall dynamics of energy monitoring have been changed and a revolution in the field of energy monition and energy metering has been erupted. The usage of smart meters guarantees more efficient energy monitoring and an extended advantage of increased capabilities. The smart meters are more accurate along with increased precision and incorporating more reliable circuitry as compared to the traditional energy meters.
We have used different components in our project for the real time calculation of voltage, current, time, frequency and power factor. All the data which include voltage, current, frequency, power factor and units consumed are send to the web server or cloud where consumer can easily access that data. When the consumer’s credit is less than the threshold value the consumer will receive an SMS through GSM, it is a notification that the 25% amount is left in the credit and the consumer must purchase more amount from utility to avoid interruption of power. In this prepaid system we have added a loan feature in which when the consumer’s credit is less than the desired value the consumer will get the loan to avoid interruption of power. These real time values are sent to the private server through Wi-Fi module (ESP8266) These values are updated after every 15 seconds, this can be set to any value depending upon the use.
After all the calculations of off peak and high peak cost which is done in the coding, is then send to the web server through ESP8266 for the user to see the real values of current, voltage, power factor and frequency and the amount of units he has consumed each day.
The GSM based prepaid energy system empowers the consumer to preload energy units within its comfort zone. Through GSM based pre-paid energy system unit can be pre-loaded by means of a cellular device i.e. the utility can send a Short Service Message (SMS) to the consumer and the on-board algorithm burned on the smart meter can detect the amount of the units to be loaded[. The designing of smart energy meter by means of GSM directly gives consumer the privilege for purchase the electrify units before its consumption. Since the system is microcontroller based, it serves as an intelligent device which regulates the energy usage and prompts the respected user by means of GSM module. We have used ZMPT101B for the measurement of AC Voltages, this voltage sensor ZMPT uses linear regression for the calculation of desired voltage. This sensor is used to read the value of the AC voltages. For the instantaneous calculation, algorithm is used to calculate the RMS values of voltages and. It is also used to for the calculation of real power consumption of the system and RMS values of Current. Arduino programming uses the samples of voltages at regular interval and calculate RMS voltage. Then the use of ESP8266 is an Arduino compatible module Wi-Fi chip with TCP/IP compatibility and this module also has MCU (Micro Controller Unit) integrated which makes it possible to control I/O digital pins via simple programming language.
