Project Summary

This project is based on the integration of renewable sources of power i.e. Wind Turbines and PV Panels to our existing generation units which are comprised of Conventional Synchronous Generators, evaluating transient stability analysis that these renewables are more endurable for voltage stability, rotor angle stability and frequency stability. Initial testing of this integration is carried out by a professional simulation software known as "DIg Silent PowerFactory", testing includes the designing of Wind Turbine, designing of PV panels, short circuit testing, and taking them on-grid. 

Hardware will be designed based on the above calcualtions to provide support for renewables with controlled capability. In addition to that an additional capability will be provided by controllers to keep power system in stability during low wind speed and less solar irradiaition.

Project Objectives

Objectives of this project are :

  1. Performing transient stabiity analysis on the existing test bus system on three different variations: Synchronous Generators, Wind Turbines and PV Panels as generation units.
  2. Creating 3-phase short circuit events on different transmission lines and bus bars for every variation.
  3. Comparing the results with two different variations: Synchronous Generators VS Wind Turbines and Synchornous Generators VS PV panels.
  4. Implementing the carried out methods on hardware components.

Project Implementation Method

  1. Familiarization with simulation software which is "DIg Silent PowerFactory".
  2. Performing small signal stability test including eigen value analysis, voltage stability test including PV and QV curve analysis on existing IEEE-39 bus system consiting of Conventional  Synchronous Generators.
  3. Modelling Wind Turbine as DFIG and designing its power electronics controllers which are Fast local voltage controller, Rotor speed controller and Pitch angle controller.
  4. Modelling PV panels and designing its power electronis controllers.
  5. Integrating both on IEEE-39 bus system and carry out Small signal stability, Voltage stability and, Frequency stability and Rotor angle stability test on every variation.
  6. Creating short circuit events of different fault resistance and reactances and plotting there transient responses after clearing the short circuit fault.
  7. Comparison of Renewable sources simulation with Conventional sources.
  8. Hardware implementation of the above system.
  9. Testing of hardware in different scenerios.
  10. Installation of hardware at University vacanity. 

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the projects are:

  1. Integration of renewables to power grids will increase sustainable energy developments.
  2. Power electronic circuitry in renewables will provide uninterrupted power supply to the consumers.
  3. It will control the rapid climatic changes and diminishing of fossil fuels.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final deliverable of the project will include the protoype of a power grid consisting of Wind Turbines and PV Panels as generation units, tranmission lines, busbars, circuit breakers, relays and a Scientific Research Paper of the Project.
