Project Title

Power Factor Correction of three phase load using PLC

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

This project proposes an automatic power factor correction for variable inductive loads, most dominantly three phase induction motors (IM) utilizing the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). With the help of PLC, different performance parameters current level, real power and inductive power are obtained and logged in the PC. Using PLC program, according to control strategy to obtain a pre specified power factor, a set of capacitors sized in a binary rate will be switched on or off with the help of switching relays and contactors. From these parameters, PLC will calculate reactive power of the system and accordingly the right sequence of the capacitors are switched on in order to compensate reactive power.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is Power factor improvement of 3 phase load here it is 3 phase induction motor. Moreover user MDI is also controlled that helps in reducing power losses and power theft.

Project Implementation Method

Here PLC is acting as a central unit that senses the power factor of the load and if needed a capacitor bank is used that introduces the reactive power in the circuit and helps inimproving the power factor to a required level.

Benefits of the Project

The purpose of power factor correction is to smoothen the line current to reduce power losses. it also helps consumers to control their MDI(maximum demand indicator). normally consumers are being charged when they have no control over MDI.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The 220V are given by main supply that are fed to current and potential transformer that are used to make ZCD that converts sine wave into square wave then a XOR gate is attached whose output is given to microcontoller (currently working onĀ Arudino then it will be replaced by PLC) then load is attached and its power factor is determined if improvement is required a capacitor bank is attached that is used to improve power factor to a required level.
