Posture Rehabilitation with Integrated Feedback Loop
Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject SummaryThe system will consist of a wireless wearable device that can be attached to a person’s back and is used to alert the user in case of an unhealthy postural situations, such as sitting with a hunchback or remaining idle for long periods of time. By motivating the user to exercise posture control, we can help improve the user’s ability to maintain an upright position of the spine on the long term with no external help, as well as reduce the possibility of future musculoskeletal problems and pain. The user will acquire awareness of their own posture using vibrational feedback, and correct it when necessary. With time, the device will unconsciously engrave the habit of maintaining a good posture, without the need for the user to be reminded. Such that, the user will be able to fix their own posture after continued use. A mobile app will also compliment the device, showing graphs of posture over time, and sending the users a summary of their progress of maintaining good postural habits so that they can track their own progress and also suggest some physician recommended exercises to improve a worsen posture.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of this project is to cut down the enormous percentage of people that deal with musculoskeletal problem due to poor posture which results in continuous stress and chronic pain in their life. By maintaining a good posture, an individual will have less stress and pressure on the spine and eventually prevent structural deformity of it. A mobile application will be used to interact with the user. The application will show graphs of posture of user over time and suggest good physicians recommended exercises to improves one’s posture.
Project Implementation MethodThe data is taken from the sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, flex sensors etc) and is sent to the microcontroller, contained in a small plastic case of our hardware model. Certain algorithm and AI is used to fulfill the correction/identification of posture. A Bluetooth module is used to connect the microcontroller with the mobile on which the data will be monitored through an application. A haptic Feedback response is used to notify the user of their bad posture.
Benefits of the ProjectIt will prevent musculoskeletal disorders and structural deformity of spine. Patients who are already suffering from chronic posture problems will have physicians approved exercises in the provided mobile application. People would have to visit their physicians much lesser. Companies will have less absentee rate due to musculoskeletal disorders. By doing some modifications it can also be used to monitor pulse rate etc.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableFinal deliverable product will have about 15cm hardware casing made from 3D printer. It will have following items in it;
1. Sensors: Magnetometer, Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Flex Sensor.
2. The sensors will be sending the data to the microcontroller ATMEGA328P - Microcontroller.
3. Bluetooth Module HC-05 will send the results microcontroller to the mobille where it will be accessed by an application.
4. A 3.7V battery will be used as the energy source to run these components. It will be regulated by a BMU (Battery Management Unit) and also charged by an adapter.
All these components will be fit in a small casing that will be applied later on a persons back for calibration and working. Our working model can also be modified in a small vest tha is easy, mobile and comfortable to wear for an indiviual while taking precautions.
