Project Title

Portable Insulin carrier for Diabetic Patients

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

Nowadays about 415 million people are living with diabetes around the world, which is estimated to be 1 in 11 of the world’s adult population. Most of them require insulin for regularization of blood sugar.

Insulin are temperature sensitive, hence, controlled temperature environment is required to maintain the effectiveness and strength of insulin. It must be kept within the temperature of 2° to 8° Celsius. Diabetic patients have to carry the insulin with them during longer journey and availability of required storage temperatures during travelling is always a problem. We aim to provide an energy efficient and cost effective solution to cope this problem. In this project we aim to design a battery operated portable device which keeps the insulin within the required temperature range.

The device will be powered-up by a battery and peltier effect (temperature difference created by applying a voltage between two electrodes connected to a semiconductor material) will be used to maintain the 2 to 8 Celcius temperate within the storage cabin of the insulin carrier device. Moreover, the temperate of cooling chamber and battery condition will be frequenctly updated over an IoT platform to maintain the history of temperature, so that, the quality of the insulin can be monitored anytime, anywhere.

The insulin carrier device will be accompanied with a charging port to connect with the automobile auxiliary power outlet for keep the battery charged during travelling within the vehicles.

Project Objectives

  • To design and develop a portable insulin carrier device.
  • To make the device cost effective as compared to devices available in the market.
  • Enhance the battery timing and reducing the power consumption by using thermoelectric effect.
  • Keeping track of temperature within the cooling chamber and helth of battery.

Project Implementation Method

The thermoelectric effect is the direct conversion of temperature differences to electric voltage and vice versa by using the semiconductor materials (peltier plates). Therefore, we will use them for attaining the required cooling temperature. The peltier plates and other modules of the device will be powered up by using a chargeable battery. Temperature sensor will be use to measure the temperature of cooling chamber continuously.

Charge controller will be used to cutoff the supply when a battery charges to desireable level and when it gets to minimum charging level, then charge controller will allow the supply to charge the battery.

The device will be connected to IoT server through and Arduino and wifi module, ESP8266 and will frequently update the temperature and battery health over the IoT server.

Benefits of the Project

Insuline Carrier – Prime use/benefit of this device will be related to blood sugar patients, who use insulin. This device will provide them the facility to carry the insulin with them during travelling.

Convenient Drug Storage – Can also be used by the healthcare representatives, who are deputed by government healthcare departments for door to door vaccination of various diseases.

Environment-Friendly – The device is environment friendly as it does not use any toxic or harmful ozone depleting substances/gases, as present in comperessor based cooling devices.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of this FYP will be a fully working and operational, standalone prototype of the insulin carrier device. The device will be having a storage capacity of al least two insulin injections and one injecting pen.
