Point of Care Electrochemical Sensor for Typhoid
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryAlmost 200,00 people die annually due to Typhoid fever and 20% of these deaths are caused by lack of proper disease diagnosis. Unavailable care and delayed detection can be fatal in many cases. Despite the advances in the medical field, it is conventionally being diagnosed in labs via culture based tests (Widal test) which is both time taking and expensive and offers lower sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, to modify the traditional, burdensome diagnostic methods of Typhoid we want to introduce a budget-friendly, portable and power efficient device which is easy-to-use in remote localities for early Typhoid diagnosis.
Project ObjectivesTo reduce the unavailability of a portable, highly sensitive device for Typhoid detection that does not demand tedious and painful means of diagnostics, we want to design our device that:
- Fulfills the requirements of a Point of care device
- Is easy to use and is contains electronic interfaces, firmwares and a mobile application for displaying results of early stage Typhoid diagnosis
- Is power and cost efficient
- Allows easy and safe access to the stored information
There are different stages of the implementation of our project.
1. Research: First we gathered a large number of researches and papers that were published on the use of biosensors and electrochemical cells in point of care diagnostics which helped us layout the entire plan
2. PCB design simulation: The second stage is of circuit simulation which is done on Proteus professional and then implementing it in realtime. It includes the design of our potentiostat and electrochemical sensor
3. Mobile application development: Simultaneously we are working on building a mobile app to which the data of the sensor will be tranferred and it will display the results of diagnostics and also save the information for future references
Benefits of the ProjectWe will introduce a Point of care device in market which is used for early detection of Typhoid disease. Due to lack of awareness of use of technology, the uneducated people of our society find it very hard to understand the diagnostic terms. Also people living in remote areas, due to isolation from testing labs, are unable to get timely diagnosis. As a solution, our device will provide these laymen easy access to early detection of this disease and low cost diagnostics. Information and previous data can also be accessed using mobile application. Our device for affordable typhoid diagnostics can act as a platform to extend the capabilities of other electrochemical biosensor researches.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableOur final deliverable will consist of three parts:
• Bio Sensor
• Potentiostat
• Mobile Application
Bio Sensor will be having three electrodes i.e., Working Electrode, Reference Electrode and Counter Electrode. For potentiostat we will be using an IC LMP91000 which will control the whole electrochemical reaction and record the values. For the microcontroller to run the IC, we will be using Arduino UNO also for the purpose of DAC and ADC. A mobile application will also be used in which machine learning algorithms will be applied on graphs and results will be concluded. Finally, for cloud storage Firebase will be used a platform.
