Project Summary

Photovoltaic (PV) technology is one of the best available technologies to use sunlight efficiently. A novel PV based hybrid outdoor lighting system is designed using light emitting diode (LED). The smart controller monitors the energy status in the battery and, accordingly, controls the light level (average lux value) to meet the lighting requirements for maximum time possible. Such a reliable hybrid lighting system will eliminate the sudden-death of light problem, which is present in conventional PV outdoor lighting systems and, therefore, will enhance the natural surveillance and feeling of safety in sustainable buildings and cities. Further, the lighting system eliminates the over discharge of the battery, which will enhance lifetime of the battery. Experimental results show that the 30 W LED-based outdoor lighting system operates 25.1 h on battery, while the previous systems has 18 h operating time. In addition, the hybrid lighting system saves electric lighting energy consumption, which accounts for 20-30% world power consumption.

Controlling the led brightness at different levels of lux.

Controlling the voltages of battery at different level of battery capacity. 

When the battery is low direct supply from AC Source.

Project Implementation Method

The LDR voltage controller circuit in our project control the voltages or brightness of the LED at different level of LUX values, when the light falling on the LDR that measures the LUX value is very low or dark it operates at its maximum voltages (12 volts) and the voltages are decreasing as the light falling on the LDR increasing. 
The second priority we are setting here for more increasing the duration of the battery discharging is that when the capacity of the of battery going to decrease (less than 50%), then again we are going to control the brightness of the led (decreasing the battery voltages) as the battery capacity decreasing. In the end when the battery is empty then the LED is going to operate directly to the AC 220 Voltages source.

Benefits of the Project

Our idea hits the saving of energy through technology automation. We are using the renewable energy resource (Sunlight) instead of the direct AC supply to operate the outdoor lighting system( street lights). We proposed a hybrid model which based on the photovoltaic and battery system. We designed and modeled the smart controller which increased the duration of the battery through different techniques. The proposed  PV-based lighting system can be commercialized, which will enhance economy of the country and exported on large-scale.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

This work, a photovoltaic based hybrid outdoor lighting system is designed, built, and tested. The lighting system is equipped with a newly designed controller. This controller aims at elongating the time of operation of the standalone lighting system by managing the withdrawal of energy from the system battery and keeping the light “on” as long as possible. The test results showed that the designed controller was operating as designed. The operation hours of the newly designed system are compared with the conventional system.
