Project Summary

The smart cooling jacket is very beneficial for masses especially for 2 wheeler riders because everyone in our country couldn’t afford a car, this jacket provides a comfortable bike ride by keeping the rider cool in extreme hot conditions. This jacket is mainly customized for bike riders or for the ones who work in conditions, exposed to high temperatures. As heat stress can result in sweating, fatigue, dizziness, hot skin temperature, sun burn, fainting and most commonly heat stroke while a portable, light weight, personal cooling system can reduce the chances of heat stroke with the use of thermoelectric effect, microcontroller technology and a bit of ingenuity. In recent few years, thermoelectric equipment has come out with potential as alternative eco-friendly applications. Applications of thermoelectric energy extended in various areas such as electricity generation, refrigeration, air conditioning etc.

Project Objectives

  • A prototype of the proposed cooling jacket is designed, so that it can protect the user from hot atmosphere.
  • To have an effective temperature difference i.e.: 5? -10?.
  • People who work under the sun continuously suffer from heat stroke because of the exposure to the sun, for example sales person etc.
  • This jacket can also be used by Traffic police officers who stands whole day under the shining sun.
  • It can benefit in any emergency situation like heat stroke.

Project Implementation Method

We’re using Peltier module, Thermoelectric cooler (TEC) which can transfer heat from one side of the device to the other side with consumption of electrical energy. This device can be used either for cooling or for heating, although in practical applications, it is used for cooling.

A Peltier module works opposite to thermocouple (thermoelectric generator). In Peltier Cooler (Peltier Effect) is used, whereas, in thermocouple, a temperature difference produces electric power (See-back /Thomson Effect). The operation of both depends upon thermoelectric effect. This effect can be used to generate electricity, measure temperature, to cool objects, or to heat them. This project (jacket) works with12V, 9A battery. A Peltier module works on the principle of ‘Peltier Effect’ that is when DC current flows, heat transfers from hot side to cold side, so that one side gets cooler while the other gets hotter. The hot side is attached to a heat sink so that it remains at a regulated temperature and it drives the heat away from the hot side into the atmosphere.

We’re going to use tubes which will be wound around the jacket; these tubes can be filled with water, sand, pneumatic (air) boots or any other similar material. We will use any of these materials depending on our need of the project. A suction fan can be used if the tubes are filled with air, and a water pump if tubes are filled with water (sucks water/ air from outside atmosphere and circulates water/air over the Peltier cooler.

We’re going to connect temperature sensors mainly DHT11 (low cost digital temperature and humidity sensor) with microcontroller in order to know the temperature. We can use Arduino Lily Pad here, it is designed for e-textiles and wearables projects. It can be sewn to fabric and similarly mounted power supplies, sensors and actuators with conductive thread.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The recent researches in the domain of thermoelectric cooling give the application as follows:

They are used in Laptops, cooling jackets, refrigerators. Laptop coolers are external devices, which are ancillaries to the existing cooling mechanism of laptops, in order to reduce their internal temperature. Available coolers do not provide efficient cooling in high ambient temperature. In [3], the paper presents the implementation of an intelligent laptop cooler, which can vary its performance according to the laptop temperature and ambient temperature, and actively cool the air flow by using thermoelectric coolers (TECs). TECs are used in jackets to maintain the human body temperature if the weather is too cold or too hot. They are further used in refrigerators for purpose of cooling. There are many papers on thermoelectric modules or its applications but unfortunately they haven’t explained about cooling jacket, this article [6] the hardware configuration and working of a prototype cooling jacket is explained.
