Project Summary

The power transmission lines are always at a risks of faults which are unavoidable but these faults can be limited to minimum to prevent huge damage to power system equipment and to maintain the stability of the power system. The continuity of supply demands a minimum fault clearing duration and repair work, thus it is necessary to implement protection schemes to limited the extreme high fault currents travelling through the lines and damaging the expensive system equipment. Traditionally the electromagnetic relays were used for protections schemes but in today's digital world digital microprocessor based relays are used which provide additional features apart from fault sensing. An automated fault sensing system based upon a micro controller configuration can provide more precise and accurate transmission line short circuit fault detection and classification. This automated system implementation benefits for reduced repair and maintenance time span and ensure the reliabilty of power delivery, the system also provides protection to power system equipment by preventing the travel of fault. This system can be implemented for voltage level below 132kv transmission line, even can be installed at low level distribution lines, and this system can be designed for unit protection schemes to protect power system equipment.

Project Objectives

•To make the prototype model of overhead transmission line fault detection.

•Interface the hardware model with Arduino (Microcontroller).

•To analyze the effect of different faults occur in overhead transmission line.

•To analyze the effect of different fault in overhead transmission line using Proteus software.

Project Implementation Method

Overhead transmission fault detector helps to determine the type of fault that has occured over the system and sends a signal to relay system to operate the circuit breaker de energizing the circuit and isolating only the faulty section of the system. Different techniques are emplyed for fault detection purpose, latest trend follow using a microcontroller and sensing devices like CTs and VTs; upon sensing the difference between the momentary values and the set point the microcontroller sends commands to relays  to operate the circuit breaker thus isolating the faulty section.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of the project is, the project is economical to install. The construction of this project is very simple and easy as compare to other protection system. It may reduce the risks of damaging the equipment in power system.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of this project is to identify the symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in less span of time.
