Project Title

On Board Diagnostics of Isuzu Truck

Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary

On-board diagnostics is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle sub-systems.

This project proposes the development of On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system for automobiles.  The proposed OBD system has a microcontroller-based processing system and it, mainly consists of:

  1. Sensors are installed at different parts of vehicle to observe various parameters.
  2. Processing unit that will take input from the sensors and signal conditioners, calculate the Realtime values of vehicle parameters and give output accordingly.
  3. System will be able to diagnose faults in parameters, abnormal abrupt changes, notify user of any abnormal condition, and in some cases indicate the cause of fault.

A basic OBD system consist of an ECU (Engine Control Unit), that uses input from numerous sensors (e.g., oxygen sensors) to manage the actuators (e.g., fuel injectors) to induce the required performance. The “Check Engine” light, also known as MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light), provides an early warning of malfunctions to the vehicle owner. A modern vehicle can support many parameters, which may be accessed via the DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector) employing a tool mentioned as a Scan-tool.

Project Objectives

Our Project is about the development of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Scanner and through this project, we will be able to solve the Problems related to emissions. This will make life easier for the vehicle’s owner and technician as well. Using DTCs, technicians will easily repair the faults and can save their time. Through getting the real-time data, we can also the predict the life and working efficiency of our vehicle’s engine. This will help us in enhancing the performance of the vehicle. Therefore, after the successful completion of our project, Scanner will have the following features:

    1. GUI-Based Interface
    2. User-friendly
    3. Faults and Explanations (DTCs)
    4. Report Generate Facility
    5. Real-Time Data
    6. Accuracy
Project Implementation Method

First of all we need to understand the project and mainly covers its background and importance. Then, we need to connect the supplied scanner with the ECU and using sniifing mechanism we will fabricate our own sanner for the given vehicle. After fabrication of the scanner, we will decode the data that is coming through ECU and using this data we will make a dictionary type helpful instructions which includes all the help for diffferent codes of data. Then we will make a GUI user fiendly interface for better interactions with the customer. And at last, we will add different features that will be helpful to understand and will provide efficient results.

Benefits of the Project

The proposed project have many benefits for the owner and technician of the given vehicle. Using OBD technique, we will be analyzing the performance of different parts of the vehicle through getting the real time data. Hence, we can also predict the life and efficiency of the engine and we can also enhance it.

The scanner, that we are fabricating will have the following features

    1. GUI-Based Interface
    2. User-friendly
    3. Faults and Explanations (DTCs)
    4. Report Generate Facility
    5. Real-Time Data
    6. Accuracy
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Final Deliverables of the proposed project are as follows

  1. Data Logging: This deliverable deals with acquiring the data from the ECU of the vehicle using some specific connector.
  2. Data Interpretation: This deliverable mainly deals with interpretation of the data that we have obtained.
  3. Data Programming: This deliverable mainly deals with the programming to make user-friendly interface that will help the user and mainly technicians.
  4. Scanner Fabrication: This deliverable mainly deals with the fabrication of our own sacnner(patent) using the supplied scanner through the snifiing mechanism.
