The advancements in technology have led to improvements in the olive process industry, like any other sector. The intervention of technological solutions in the olive process industry is resulting in exponential growth, for the industry. One of the most fundamental processes in the Olive process industry is the removal of the pit from the olive fruit. An Olive Pit Extraction Machine is a semi-autonomous machine, whose fundamental purpose is the removal of olive pits and falls in the category of complete destoning machine. The local availability of the machine is non-existent, and importing such is an expensive endeavor. The said machine is a cost-effective solution for farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), involved in the industry. The machine removes the repetitive human-driven olive destoning, with machine-based destoning, reducing time and cost penalties. There are three major parts of the machine namely; Olive Feeder, Olive Carrier, and Pit Detaching Device. The Olive Feeder part of the machine would be human-operated and olives would be deposited by the handler in a pre-determined fashion. Olive Carrier will be carrying olives to the pitting destination via a conveyer belt with pockets. The pit detaching device should consist of a system of needles that would be responsible for destoning the pit of the olives held in the desired position and with the desired spacing

Project Objectives

1. We aim to provide an effective mechanism for the purpose of removing the pit from olives.

2. The pitted olives can play a massive role to boost the income generated from exports.

3. The pitted olives can also be used as table olives and for the extraction of pure olive oil.

Project Implementation Method

Our team has decided to implement the project via a roller design as this design has the potential to serve as the most ideal design which completely satisfies our requirement as well. The roller design guarantees us that not only this design would make our olive pitting machine compact and desirable, but will also effectively destone the olives without damaging the flesh or the pit of the olive. Another window of opportunity we attain from using this design is that it will enable us to destone olives of all grades (sizes and shapes). The roller would add the feasible element in our design as it would be capable of being replaced with other rollers accommodating various grades of olives. Our design would consist of multiple rollers with pockets that will uphold the olives in their desired position for the destoning process. The extensive and detachable range of rollers not only makes our design the top candidate to be implemented in industries but also guarantees harmless and excellent pitting of the olives.

The Olive Pitting Machine is a remarkable breakthrough that has worldwide applications. It is a lifetime opportunity for investors and a direct ticket to boost the economy. The demand for olives in the world is not bound to decrease anytime soon which just opens new doors for inventions in the field circling olives. The Olive Pitting Machine can be implemented on various ranges, from small household applications to massive industrial applications. The same mechanism for the machine can be implemented to create a small handy pitting device that pits one olive at a time, and the same mechanisms can be used to fabricate machines that are capable of pitting thousands of olive over a minute. The pitted olives can have numerous applications such as pickled olives, table olives, or for simply extracting the olive oil. The pit of the olives is not considered a waste as well, it is also capable of scientific study and is contemplated as the source of virgin and pomace olive oil.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In the design, instead of placing the olives in horizontal compartments, as is conventionally conducted, olives are placed in a roller cylinder where the needles insert the olive and remove its pit. The cylinder continues to roll and transports the olives to their desired location, whereas, the pit falls in the compartment below. The needles are placed in a vertical orientation. One network of needles may contain 6-24 pitting needles which destones the olives upon reaching the pitting destination. This type of design is the most effective one as it can not only destone multiple olives at one instance but also destones them in a fashion which is very less likely to damage the olive. Therefore, we have concluded to use this design as the optimal design for our project.
